Rust!

Post by Danz4coupe » Sat May 20, 2017 9:52 pm

My coupes got the rust on the tailgate in the same place, read this and phoned Coopers BMW Chelmsford. Booked in for next Saturday to be looked at, photos taken and then info sent off to BMW for a YAY or NAY.

Yesterday was drop off day. She's now with BMW and getting the boot replaced. Even though warranty didn't want to cover the wings Ben (the nice chap at BMW) said they would investigate further and see if they can reclaim.

They think she should be ready by Tuesday next week. In the meantime I've been given this to drive.

Not the M4 I wanted but it will do. Funnily enough though the boot space looks less than the coupe! Granted it's got the height but the width is tiny. Think I'll struggle to get my golf clubs and trolley in there this weekend

To sum up then... well, I'm happy to be fair. Wasn't expecting much especially as it's an 06 car so one year left on warranty. Her service history is there but by independents since 64k.
Just out of interest what history did you need to show them? Was it just a stamped service book or proper invoices from VAT registered garages? My roadster's just out of warranty and thankfully currently rust free but it might be useful to anyone with a newer car who's just got a stamped service book rather than actual invoices etc.

I don't know if its just me, but recently there seems to have been a fair few cars on here with rusty arches. A few months ago I had never seen/heard of an E85/6 with rusty arches. I hope it's not becoming a E85/6 thing as they all get older in the way it became an E46 thing. I would hate to see E85/6's getting scrapped solely because of rusty arches. That said at least the wings are bolt on jobbies.

No invoices needed just emailed the garage a picture of my stamped service book. Service hasn't been with BMW since around 60k either. From 60 to 96 it's been at an independent BMW garage.

It's the curse of archliners... bits of grit get stuck between the liner lip and the wing and grind away at the paintwork and rustproofing.

My coupes (57 plate) boot is fine but, I do have a small rust spot and slight surrounding bubbling , on the inside of the drivers door!

Do you think its worth taking it to BMW and see if they'll sort it out??

No harm in trying. As long as the rust has not started due to damage etc and you've got service history they should cover it.

Looking good George. I've just had authorisation from BMW to get my tailgate replaced. Without this post I wouldn't have looked so closely and found some small bubbles of rust under the paint and the start of some rust at the seams. Thanks for posting.

Another Z4C backend saved thanks to this thread! Just got mine back from BMW having had the boot lid replaced under warranty. Looks superb. Polished the car and valeted the interior for me too. They didn't even ask to see the service history!

Only down side was having to drive an auto Mini One for a few days. The Missus loved it though so...

Is that a Fiesta that someone else drives for you? - Neat.
I'd rather be chauffeured in a Fiesta than be given and automatic mini one and have to drive myself around in it.
