Not quite yet...but tonight I played around with it again a bit. When I got in the car nothing (was working yesterday). Plugged in the laptop and inpa "found" the roof module when asked...then everything springs back in to life. It's like something wasn't powering up without a signal from the laptop to wake up. Tried the roof about 10 times after that and all well, but I bet tomorrow I will try it again and it will be dead.

I'm thinking roof module but don't want to just throw random parts at the car until I know for sure. Would be good if you could try scanning yours to see if you get a similar result?

Finally solved this...noticed on the laptop that the roof module was saying it wasn't getting a signal from the temperature sensor. I knew that sensor was working fine, so took a gamble that the roof module had failed.

Bought one on EBay for £30...fitted and everything works. Turns out that the main motor is fine too so I now have a fully functional roof.

I think it has to be well in to the minus to stop it from opening, so as no accidental damage to the various moving parts.

did you ever get to the bottom of the temperature sensor error? in my attempts to figure out why my orange engine symbol is on i've found i have 5 errors on the module where it thinks outside temp is 7C error 0x0021 or 210507

I didn't dig any further on that error...changed out the roof control module and all was well so I left it at that. I just assumed that the module had the issue reading the temp sensor info.
Sorry can't be of anymore help.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I saved $700 on that! Just add a little for other friends who need to replace the control module.

It is really plug-in and play for 2007 e85 z4.

After a diagnosis, asking $185, I was asked another $800 to replace the control module, programming, testing (and tuning if necessary). The repair shop confirmed that the programming is required (bullsh**). This post gave me confidence to replace it by myself. Thank you!
