Engine Management Warning Light Problem

Post by darchard » Sun Jun 11, 2017 6:41 pm

Hi all,

I have a 2003 3.0 Z4 and it's an excellent car, however it's getting on a bit now and starting to use a fair bit of oil and unfortunately the oil level warning light doesn't no longer works.

The yellow engine management warning light came on suddenly the other day, along with a major loss of power and rough running. It sounded like a cylinder wasn't firing so I checked the plugs and coil but they were all fine. By this time I'd driven 20 miles to get home.

I remembered having a similar problem when the oil level was very low so I checked the oil and it was 'off the stick'. I filled up the oil hoping for the warning light to go out (like last time) but the light's still on and the engine's still running really rough.

I've just ordered a diagnostic cable to check for error messages and am hoping I can somehow re-set the EMS and all will be back to normal. Is this likely or am I just kidding myself? Have I done serious damage? Should I make an advance garage booking to I can get her back on the road pronto?

Very grateful for any advice or suggestions as I wait nervously for the cable to arrive.

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

first scan for errors, then report back here.

nobody knows at this moment, but an educated guess from me is that low oil level does not give a rough running engine... would suspect bobbins first

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

I'd suggest replacing your ccv system to cancel that out. I'm almost certain this could be ur problem. They become mechanically compromised over time, especially atthat age. Mines an 03 3.0 and it was one of the first things i did to address high oil consumption.
Worked a treat - hasnt needed a drop of oil in 5000 miles since the swap wheras i was topping up every 1000 miles with about 1-2L.
Could also be a raft of other causes but i'd suggest ccv renew as it will be hard/brittle and the diaphragm inside the separator can fail too at this age giving rise to very rough idle and powerdrop. My diaphragm went due to an associated problem with the throttlebody. Thus, you could be solving both problems in one fell swoop potentially.
Go for the febi cold climate version if so- it's got better insulation, protecting against condensate buildup inside the system. Pita to fit but worth it.
Good luck fella

Edit: plus ofc as per vesters suggestion to obd scan. (I use carly) but theres many options available.

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

Post by darchard » Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:45 pm

Hi,

I've downloaded the errors and tried to attach the files but I keep getting an error that the file extension is invalid!!
So I've pasted the details below. Sorry it's so long :(
There are quite a few lines but I'm not sure which are relevant. Any ideas?

Thanks,
David

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

Post by vester86 » Tue Jun 13, 2017 8:37 pm

wauw, thats a lot of error codes, especially from the airbag.

i don't see any errors that really relate to the problem you were discribing, looks like your car has had some battery issues in the past.

worth to fix the oil level sensor, that one had some nasty consequences in my car (made short circuit & blocked some other data somehow)

can you try to clear all codes & see which one returns after a decent drive?

Randomly I might have an oil level sensor in my shed for your car. If you find the part number I can check and if it fits you can have it. It is used but I believe it's functional (it's not from my car but was given to me in a bundle of Z4 stuff from another forum member)

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

Post by darchard » Tue Jun 13, 2017 9:03 pm

An update....
So I cleared the error messages and took her for a short drive. Still very juddery as if missing on one or two cylinders (just a guess) and very low on power.
No error messages any more. No EML illuminated.
The 'Engine' telltale light is lit, which the manual says means 'Exhaust emissions have deteriorated'. I also noticed a smell a bit like like burning rubber.
Doesn't sound too good when I write it down like that :(
Any ideas?

very strange, when running that bad you should have an error or 2. no clue on where you should look, especially with the "burnt rubber" smell

Engine Management Warning Light Problem

Post by darchard » Mon Jun 26, 2017 3:56 pm

A quick update....

I took the Z4 in to a local garage and apparently they hooked her up to their computer and straight away got a 'misfire cylinder 5' error. They swopped in the new coil pack I fortunately left with them and that fixed the problem. Now I'm a bit frustrated because (a) when I swopped the same coil pack in previously it didn't fix the problem and (b) when I connected up my laptop I got no error message  Still, at least all is now well with the world :)

I'm wondering which software they would have used. I believe they used it while the engine was running while I used INPA which didn't show the error. Would be good to know for the future. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the support,
David
