Yukky DISA valve!
2004 3.0 106k fsh owned her just over a year, no real problems just a lovely girl, lovely girl.
I'm a great 'forum reader' regardless of which car I've got, so I've always got my nose in the Z4 Forum, & it's paid dividends.
Everyone said the DISA valve will go 'belly up' at some point, so even though 'my car' was fine, I bought an I6 upgrade a few weeks ago waiting 'for the right moment' to refurb the DISA. "It doesn't need doing" I kept telling myself, there's no rattle, no loss of power, no difference.......until today........thought I heard a rattle from the valve area so took off the DISA valve, you can see the crud hanging around the flap base! It was lose & quite a lot of play up & down as well as sideways! Strange thing is, I could turn the flap but the vacuum rod stayed still, nothing appeared broken it just didn't seem to work. Cleaned everything up & I must say, the upgrade kit is well worth the money, nicely made, easy to do & the end result is a nice tight paddle! Checked it all over & seems to work nicely now. I would say it's the original which at 106k I have no complaints.
Morale of this waffle is.........even if you think 'yours' is fine, just take half an hour & check it out, it's easy to take off, less than 10 minutes even to a diy spanner head like me!..........you maybe surprised. There are lots of youtube guides if you look.
Last sentence.....thanks to everyone on here, great forum & so much info around.

Where did you buy your kit? My car is off the road just now getting painted so getting a few pieces together for a refresh of the car.

Get the i6 automotive one from eBay, I made them an offer of about £4.50 less than the buy it now and they accepted, worked out cheaper than buying from their site!
Mine sounded like a diesel before I did it..

Just google I6 Z4 DISA valve upgrade, I too offered a fiver less & quoted 'Z4 Forum' and that was accepted.
Even if you don't use it immediately it's there when you need it.

Forgot to add, double check your car as one of their upgrades won't match the 3.0.

Thanks guys, I'm doing a total refresh on the car, it's getting a full respray right now now so I won't see it for a good few weeks yet but I'll be stock pilling stuff to do while the weather is good
