Cold Start Issues

Post by acer54 » Thu Jul 06, 2017 9:59 am

I have just bought my Zed (Automatic) and I am experiencing some cold start issues, after starting revs fall really low and usually recover but sometimes the engine stalls - this lasts for 20 to 30 seconds.
During this period if I put my foot on the brake pedal to select drive from park the revs go up and down quite violently for about 20 to 30 seconds, once it settles down I can select drive and proceed normally.
This only happens from a cold start, when the car has warmed up it behaves normally, has anybody also experienced this and what was the fix?

Cold Start Issues

You don't mention which engine you have?

But starting with simple (cheap) generic possibilities I'd look for a blocked or leaky inlet or vacuum hose, or oil breather valve/hose. These affect inlet pressures and will cause these issues. Check all hoses carefully, particularly around the intake flexi parts and boots. I think you mentioned previously that yours is a recent Jap' import, in which case you may have extra emissions kit which will have further potential for blockages/leaks.

It's a 3.0 litre engine, not sure about the extra emissions kit, after 2-3 minutes of warming up everything is normal.

Does this fall under the troublesome DISA valve symptoms?

I can't help, but for the last month I have been having very similar issues. Although mine has never actually stalled, the revs fluctuate when touching the brake (fine when idling in neutral).

Car is a 3.0i SMG. I had been assuming its sensor related because the engine runs fine but the manual downshifts are very hesitant. Have you noticed any difference in your gear changes with the auto?

No changes with the gearshifts up or down the box, once the car has warmed up the symptoms disappear completely.

Problem resolved, intake hose split.
I've attached pic's of the hose with part number etc.

It would seem that the issue is not resolved, more hoses found perished and cracked and replaced and this was to no avail either.
Real culprit was the cheap generic MAF that had been fitted, branded Hella MAF fitted and everything is now as it should be.
