Small oil leak

Post by MarkPendlebury » Thu Jul 06, 2017 12:03 pm

When my Z4 is left standing for a couple of days and after starting I get a smell of burning oil for about 30secs. After this all ok. It's done 74k and I've read that could be valve cover gasket.
Could this be the problem and is it an easy and cheap fix..?

Could well be as it would drop onto exhaust manifold and burn off. I would open the bonnet have a look and feel for oil. Then, start up,look around engine and you should see it smoking. If not look elsewhere

It could be, but I would also check around the oil filter housing as these two are probably the most common leaks across the e85/6 range. The valve cover gasket is a relatively easy fix and cheap fix, just the cost of the gaskets really. So circa £20-30. The oil filter housing is a bit harder but still home doable. Depends on you really. If it's not too bad leaving the oil filter housing till the next oil change is feasible and then get the garage to do it along with the oil/filter change.

Yup, rocker cover gasket. I had the same as did the majority of guys on here. Filter housing is not near the exhaust but I would check it anyway. Take out the air filter box and have a good look down there. If it's wet with oil, it'll be the filter housing gasket.
