ultimate road trip - Route des Grandes Alpes

Post by Cambridgez4 » Thu Oct 03, 2013 7:38 pm

In July 2006 with my old E85, I did the Route des Grandes Alpes (High alpine route) from Lake Geneva to Menton on the french Mediterranean coast. It's the most fantastic route - well signposted with brown tourist signs, taking in the most spectacular of the French Alpine passes - a truly wonderful experience, taking several days.

I am taking delivery of my E89 on 23/12/13 and I plan to do this route again in July 2014. It was so much fun that I can't wait to do it all over again. If anyone wants to do it, please don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll give you some tips!

One piece of advice try to Avoid August the French migrate in thier thousands and clog a lot of the roads up, especially Saturdays.

I can't recommend this route enough! The website also gives suggestions of hotels at various budgets along the way - we stayed in 3 different lovely alpine hotels. Very happy to give any more advice as necessary.

I did 3 ski seasons in Les Gets and Morzine and know the roads down to Thonon are epic!

I bet it was an amazing trip! Would be great to go all the way down to Nice on it!

Fantastic, can you tell me how long the trip took? I am interested as me and the Mrs are considering a trip to Italy and this may be a nice way of getting there (But I may duck off before Menton to cross over to Italy)
