Boot soft close failure

Post by flybobbie » Wed Oct 26, 2016 8:35 pm

Well I promised myself not to spend another penny on the car after the space saver wheel.
Late yesterday was talking to a colleague on how few mechanical problems I have had with the car  .

So today needed to nip to the bank from work. Weather nice, will lower roof.
So it started to judder as it opened, a bit weird.
So I closed it.
Then noticed the soft close feature of the boot was cycling, open, close, open, close, etc.
So fully opened and close several times and didn't want to fully lock.
Setting the alarm it would go off after 20 seconds, I suppose it thought the boot was open as it wasn't fully closed.

Began to think, the battery is 7 years old, I wonder if it's trying to tell me something (like spending money), preventing me from being locked out from the battery. All other electrics were fine. Battery volt 12.21.
So bit the bullet, checked out Halfords and treat the car to a new AGM battery.
Halfords do them, fitted and coded £159 (bit of discount as it was the first the lad there had done, learning curve, but straight forward).

So did it cure the problem....no.
Boot continued to cycle and bong "OPEN" when driving.

So stripped out the boot panel.
Could see the actuators running but seemed to stop short of hitting a micro switch and would cycle back to open.
For some reason would not fully traverse.
Cycled several times by pushing the latches up.
Waggled the connectors, then stopped working altogether.
Boot now only latches on the badge handle.
Looks like new mechanism in the region of £300.
I have noticed a part number change on these, I wonder if these have been failing and been modified.
(A BMW document says the boot mechanism will only cycle twenty times then stop for two minutes to prevent overheating.
Perhaps I left it waiting).

Have seen a 2nd hand one, abroad ebay, in bits with what is described as a faulty micro switch, wonder if these go.
What I can't see is what is stopping the motors go full travel before they give up and return to open state.

Well the motors have stopped completely now.
Will dismantle and find out how they operate.
