Engine management light :s

Post by RoyS » Sun Apr 20, 2014 6:05 pm

Hi guys, as you may know I'm pretty new to z4's, not even had mine a week yet and the problems start  . Well it's the first time I've done a long drive in her (200 miles) and all was good, until I was about 3 miles from home. There are a series of round abouts linked my national speed limit A roads, I must admit I was driving her fast between these but nothing too excessive. Then after coming out of the final one and putting my foot down a bit, the engine management light comes on and the exhaust sounds really different, also she is lacking quite a bit of power. In the control systems (on the idrive) it comes up with no faults but seems to vibrate when I press on the pedal in the low rev range, like I said I was only 3 miles from home so I gently took her there. Does any one have any idea what this could be? I'm not mechanically minded so I have no clue what so ever, as far as I'm aware it is a standard exhaust oh and it's a 30i.

Sounds like you went into limp mode, if you have a code reader I would run a test and see what is displayed.

You could also read this to see if it sounds like the problem your having

if it is the problem it's a pretty easy fix

Thanks, one of my friends may have a code reader, I'll start asking. How much will BMW charge just to have a look, or don't I want to know :/ is there anyway to upload videos on here so people know what it sounds like?

Not sure how much they charge LOL so far I've avoided the stealers hmmm I mean dealers LOL, I just went through cleaning my vanos and finding one had a fault if cleaning does the trick it doesn't cost you anything but time. The one I replaced cost me $120 and it took about 30 minutes.

But as far as posting pictures and videos check out the newbie section for all the how to's

sounds exactly like what happened to my 1 series and it was the coils. Had them replaced and it was like a new car again.

Buggers Roy, not sure I wouldn't put new NGK spark plugs in just to try, but I hope you get it sorted man!

It's still under warrenty, they should let me bring it to a garage down here surely? Just the problem is I bought the car 200 miles away would that be a problem at all do you think?

Still under warranty, I'd have a dealer fix it! :) My 07 is way out which is why I sped so much time figuring out my own problems.
