Gearbox oil leak

Post by martins » Tue Dec 27, 2016 5:29 pm

Hi,

While getting the car MOT'd and it's HPFP fixed, the dealer pointed out an oil leak under the car. This seemed very reminiscent of last year where under warranty the dealer fixed the seal between the gearbox and engine, so I asked them to have a look, and they diagnosed it as the DCT gearbox mechatronic cover gasket (Part http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... 8607842856).

This afternoon I decided to take a closer look myself:

Yep, evidence of oil:

Not a lot of evidence of oil from the gear box:

Nor here:

But there is engine oil coming from the engine end (again I guess!)

I mentioned this to the dealer and they said that parts replaced under warranty have no further warranty one the warranty has expired. Does that sound right?

Thats def ur main seal again. My e46 m3 had a main seal failure and it cost me megabucks to get sorted. The gasket is cheap but the labour involved to replace it is v time consuming.
Not sure re ur warranty issue but if ur not covered for it go to an indy not a main dealer. U will just get ur pants pulled down.
Good luck!

Edit bad spelling lol

Sounds wrong, they changed a part... supposedly and it's failed within a year of fitting, can't be right
Did they change it last year or just clean the area ??

I think the op has the correct info about the warranty repair, I think the customer has to make a financial contribution to the cost for the part concerned to be under warranty in its own right

The OP is right, if the warranty runs out on Fri and something is fixed on Thur its only covered until Fri, that's just the way it works.

That makes sense, but they did tell him it was a totally different gasket from what appears to be leaking. This is what they say was repaired last year (main seal) which appears to be leaking. Was it repaired or did they just clean the area ??

Gearbox oil leak

I've heard a few reports of this on DCT cars (BMW but not limited to Z4s).

Not seen it on mine but will be checking when weather improves. Mind, I had my entire gearbox replaced at year 1.

Gearbox oil leak

Thanks for the comments guys. To be honest, I'm pretty unbothered about the engine oil leak, it's easy to buy a bit more oil and a hell of a lot cheaper unless it's raining oil out of the bottom! Looking at the tray under the engine there was a bit of gearbox oil on the tray but no sign of drips. If the gearbox gets low on oil, will it detect it and show an engine code? That's my worry that the gearbox will drain it's oil and lunch itself!
