Not seen that before but it definately looks like something has been put on it that has reacted with it.
A shame as you will see it everytime you are in the car.

Have you got an air freshener in your car? I've heard of them reacting with plastic trim parts-the chemicals must be pretty nasty :(

No air freshner near it . I personally thought it might have been the sun. Anyone know if i can replace the button?

My money is on this button is directly under the rear view mirror and some time in the past there been a dangling air freshener . The oils in them can drop and peal plastic coatings , my old mans freelander did the same on his hazard button very common . I never now hang air freshener, I use sprays on the matts and carpet

It may also be worth checking the rear view mirror isn't leaking ! The auto dim rear view mirrors have a fluid between the two sheets of glass inside them and between the glass is a fluid that is very corrosive , the The mirror is damaged it can leak out and dissolve the dash, it's really nasty fluid . The early E85's suffered with this issue but I've not heard of an E89 doing it, but might be worth checking , if it's leaking, remove the mirror straight away before more damage is done . Excessive heat exposure can cause a leak too . Best check just in case .

Maybe a drop of petrol on a fingertip after a fill up? Probably a long shot but if it's left for a while it could react I suppose. You'd assume it was done by a lefty if it is from the pump.
