Locked out my Z4

Post by Bmwsos » Tue Mar 14, 2017 10:16 pm

Hi guys wonder if anyone can help with this as I'm at last resort after trawling forums. My dads 2014 Z4 has been away over winter and the battery has went dead! Both key fobs will not open the doors the flick out key the goes into the driver lock will not open the lock. Wd40 it tonight with no luck, you can see the lock on the door slightly rising when turning the key, tried multiple ways with door handle open / extra force etc.. no luck. Does anyone have any other ideas to try or if I can somehow get a supply voltage onto it to possibly open?

This is a wildcard, but, I seem to remember the positive lead for possibly the starter goes through the boot floor in the battery compartment on the righthand side.
If the rear right wheel and arch liner removed you might see the cable as it runs to the front.
Search around for some battery boot or underside pics.
Just found this.

In the video you can see to the right a red thick lead goes to a black bulkhead fixture, this passes through to the under side.

Even without power you should be able to use the manual key to open the drivers door. You can then supply power via the engine bay or reach through the ski hatch to add power to the battery (ive had to do this). However if you can't get into the car in the first place...

There's no keyhole on the boot of an e89? Design flaw if so imo.
Is there an emergency method to release bonnet via removing grill/s ...then attaching a booster battery to jump points in the engine bay?

Thanks guys. Was at the key for ages tonight as ive seen the key should work but no joy. The frustrating part is you can see the lock wiggle and lift slightly when turning the key but it will just not go up. I'll maybe try again tomorrow, if all fails I'll be on the phone to local BMW garage to pick it up

Not sure of the E89 engine layout and undertray shape, but I'd jack the car up, make sure it's safe and connect power to the starter motor main cable and an earth. Jump start or charger and then open the the door with the blip...

Bit of messing but dignity retained vs calling the garage :)

That was my first thought, but getting under the car to remove the engine cover and trying to reach up to the starter might be a bit dodgy.

Not sure what you mean by 'dodgy'. Obviously need to make sure car is safe and stable, ideally on axle stands. Might have to partially drop the undertray, but only a 30 minute job in total plus time to charge enough to operate the locks

Is jacking up and locating 12v clip on points an easy enough job? I've seen something where it's close to the driver side wheel?

Is BMW assist still active - its a three year old car - if there is a way to get in they will be best placed to know!

I know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same problem with my 2011 35is & wanted to know how this issue was resolved?

Joint the AA or similar, give them a call in a week or so and they will open it.
