Spark plug change in BMW Z4 (E85) 2.0i

Post by Kelfielddegsy » Fri Aug 12, 2016 7:40 pm

I hope this will help.
I looked all over the Internet and couldnt find a 'how to' for my 2.0i 2006.
This is the first time I've done it and in all, took half an hour.
Tools needed were just ratchets in a 16mm, to remove the strengthening bar nut and 10mm plug socket with long extension. I used Bosch plugs that were £6 each and Double platinum. Codes on the plugs box are FR7KPP332 and IZFR6H11.
1. Place protection (towel, etc) on wing and remove oil cap.
2. Remove bolt out of strengthening bar using 16mm socket, loosen the other end and move to the side.
3. Pull gently on BMW plastic cover. It is attached by plastic plugs and comes off easily.
4. Lift up Coil wire cover, this will eject the wiring. I sprayed Penetrating oil into it once out.
5. Gently pull up the Coil. Do not waggle or force it. I just pulled gently straight up.
6. The Coil comes out, I sprayed silicone spray inside so it doesn't stick next time.
7. Using 10mm plug socket and long extension, gently take out the old plug. They shouldn't be oiled up, but browny grey in colour.
8. Insert new plug, but put a bit of copper grease onto the thread to ensure it doesn't stick. I couldn't find torque setting, so tightened gently then just nipped up slightly. Don't go mad. It's probably about 17-20nm.
9. Insert coil back in, pushing gently straight down until it seats onto the plug. I didn't know whether to replace the coils as well, but read that there is no need. They either work or they don't. If they do, they're good.
10. Insert wiring plug back in and push down the Coil cover. This will gently pull the plug into place.
11. Put the BMW plastic cover back on and oil cap. I actually worked with the oil cap back on as I don't like leaving an open hole into the engine whilst working.
12. Replace the strengthening bar and rebolt.
13. Start her up!
14. Remember to do one at once, don't rush and don't force anything.
I've attached 4 photos as that's all I could download on. Hope they help.
