Increase Music Capacity of CIC Hard Drive

Post by R.E92 » Fri Feb 03, 2017 1:10 pm

This isn't my DIY so I'm just going to cross-link it and add a couple of images that are bespoke to the E89 model.

The initial DIY is here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showth ... p?t=841458
The links for the download files and PDF instructions are in this post: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpo ... tcount=183

I just wanted to post it here to users are aware that this can be done on the E89. Infact it seems easier on out models as only one trim piece has to come out.

After replacing the old 60GB slow as f*ck (4k RPM??)HDD with a 128GB SSD the system seems a little more snappy. I'm in the process of importing all 40GB of my music onto the drive now. Doing it in small chunks as it would probably take 3 hours to import at once.

To get access to the HDD slot in the CIC on the E89 I removed the following panel with the help of a few loyalty cards. Just carefully wedge them into the sides as shown and pull outwards until the cover pops out;

These are the two screws that need removing to get to the HDD;

The rest of the process is as per the linked posts above. Took me 20min to remove the drive and 3 hours to process the new drive which was done in the background while doing other tasks on my PC.

Cliff notes:
- Buy SSD : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KCFP850/ ... TE_3p_dp_1
- Buy USB IDE converter : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-in-1-USB-2- ... 1085636582
- Remove Stock HDD
- Follow PDF guide and transfer data across to new SSD
- Remove jumper from new SSD
- Place new SSD back into car
- Start car up and hold down power button on radio for 30 seconds until the unit powers down

The car will take 2min to sort itself out with the new disk but you should be able to use the nav again. Then you can start importing new music.

The capacity displayed in the CIC menu will be incorrect. It still reads 12GB free until you get within 12GB of the new partition limit.

I hope a few people get some use out of it. It's such a good solution for people with large music collections. It always bugged me how such a modern car could have such little space for media.
