Hi, it would help if you told us what model z4 you have?

My e85 has hill start assist. When in gear you'd have your foot on the brake and then when you move your foot from the brake pedal the car is held for a couple of seconds, giving enough time to get your foot over to the accelerator.

I'd assume this is tech that they would pass on to the e89 as it's a newer model. Not sure exactly what your asking though a bit more of a description might help you get a more helpful answer

Often wish the E85 didn't have it. Can be a pain reversing off the drive. Hand brake works far better.

I agree, or at least an easy way to turn it off for manoeuvring.

Rob- Oh really? That's a bit tight of Bmw isn't it? Unless of course it isn't compatible with software / mechanics of some models for some reason :|

some people think it was an oversight on the factories part, as it was a feature described in the brochure!
I don't miss it to be honest, after all we all coped ok before it was invented didn't we?

My Z4 is a 2.0i and 2012.
When I put the handbrake on and move my foot to accelerator it doesn't move. Thats how my A5 used to work. Once I stop on a steep hill and put my foot on the brake and engage E brake whats my next move ?

Once you have put the e-brake on you must press it to release it again. It does not go off on its own.
If you have hill assist you can just use the footbrake and the car will be held for a few seconds before it rolls back as already said.

Ok

So no hill assist. I release handbrake and put foot on brake pedal. At this point is it just the conventional dash to get the breaking point? Just seems odd ?

No dash required, why don't you find the biting point before you release the ebrake? Exactly the same as you would do in a car with a conventional handbrake & no electronic nanny

I'm getting a little confused by this thread - the park assist on my E85 is great; no need to balance the clutch when setting off on an incline, I can't see any negatives whatsoever.

I think some people can't get to grips with the absence of a natural rolling movement when manoeuvring on a slope? It can be a bit "stop & start"?

If you think that is bad you should try the auto hold in the X6, its a pain in the arse when trying to park as everytime you come to a stop the e-brake activates and then the accelerator must be pressed to get rolling again.
Its great everywhere else, at lights, at junctions, in traffic etc. but parking is annoying.
