This will be my next project - got the wheels - gonna get 'em refurbed at steven edwards in halifax and then retyre with falkens. The only decision i'm struggling with is whether to go with gloss black or satin matt black finish

Steve rekons

Satin black can be done if you'd prefer that type of finish. I have a trick for achieving this type of satin/minimum gloss finish which might save a few quid and make the job a little easier - it uses less materials and theres no polishing time to account for - it involves applying straight black basecoat (which ordinarilly dries matt) but adding a tiny amount of 2-pack lacquer to it to achieve a very slight satin effect. The only downside with type of finish is that any tiny imperfections cannot be polished out - the wheels must be left with the gun finish, however, tiny imperfections on the surface are very hard to see due to the dull finish so i it would'nt be a problem at all.

hmm decisions !!!!

that z4c looks fantastic on those wheels!

with regards to painting them satin black, theprophecy, i personally would go with gloss.

the previous owner of my car had the ellipsoids powdercoated satin black, and although they are easy to keep clean, they don't look as nice on a sunny day as they would in gloss black.

pic of mine for reference:

re the repainting i would think that wet flatting primer with 1200 grade paper may give you adhesion problems, normally data sheets say to paint colour on 800 or 600 w and dry, we've all seen peoples lacquer coming off in sheets when pressure washing vehicles, this is down to bad prep, just my twopenneth, good luck, will look v. nice.
