Run Flat or regular tyres

Post by Mubaideen » Thu Mar 02, 2017 2:08 pm

Hey all,

Sorry I'm new here and I don't know much about cars..

I have a Z4 3.0..i changed the tyres 14 months ago with a regular tyres and not run flat tyres..

The rear tyres were torn and sliced/ripped from the inner sides..

Is this because they're regular and not run flat??

Shall I replace them with new run flat or regular ones..

Anyone has any idea why they're ripped that quickly??

Many thanks

doesnt sound right, the wheels should have no bearing on that sort of damamge, sounds like the tyres were over inflated and have delaminated.

Many thanks Jamie for your swift reply..

Do you know what the recommended pressure for the regular tyres.

My tyres are 225/40/R18 for the front and
255/35/R18 for the rear

Thanks again for the great info

Is it not on a plaque inside the drivers door?
From memory, my 35i is 3.1ATM rear, 2.6ATM front - will check later to confirm sizes and pressure.

Yes, just use the pressures on the chart in the door jamb.

Were the old ones worn on the edges?

The Zed does tend to wear the inner edges of the rears due to the camber they run. Sounds like yours may be a bit excessive and need an alignment check.

If you take a photo low down from the rear which captures the tyres and post it, if it's excessive we'll be able to see..

Go and get a hunter alignment buddy with M settings (less rear camber) and that should help things a lot.

Many thanks to all of you

Your info was really helpful to me.

Stupid me forgot to take a photo after replacing the tyres..they were vertically sliced as if you're slicing a cheese or a cake..from the inner side

It might be as stated above due to an alignment issue..I highly suspect that..will do the alignment tomorrow..

Appreciated much guys..

Love and peace to all of you

Run Flat or regular tyres

One of mine prior to replacing (recently after purchase). I didn't realise how aggressive the camber was on the rear.
This causes increased inner wear of the tyre, which is the vertical slicing I think you're referring to. So on the outside a tyre might look to have some tread depth left, upon proper inspection it's a different story.

You need new, good branded tyres. Full 4-point wheel alignment (sorry can't advise on where!)

Hey Kis

Exactly same as what happened with you..same thing happened to both rear tyres..

Hopefully this won't happen again with the new tyres

Get your Rear Trailing arm bushes checked too, if they are heavily worn they will not help matters
