Choose a car for my friend...
So... bit of a development on this. Mate had his 57 plate 330i for around 6 months now, got in touch with me a few weeks ago saying he had EML light on and car had rad fan all the time and was mis-firing, sometimes going into limp home mode. Also takes a quite a few cranks to start from cold.
I told him to bring it over so I could stick in on INPA to read the codes. This is when I got my first shock... it's not an N52!!!
BMW only bloody changed over to the N53 two months before... so essentially he has the direct injection n/a version of the N54 . I feel terrible as I said how reliable the N52 was and that as long as he does the water pump he is unlikely to have any other issues.
Anyway, put the diags on and got the following :
0x29CE - misfire, cyl 2 (poss coil pack, carbon build up or failing injector?)
0x29E1 - fuel mixture lean - bank 2 (could be related to 02 sensor or HPFP?)
0x2A98 - inlet camshaft to crankshaft correlation error (intake vanos solenoid or intake camshaft sensor?)
0x2E85 - water pump communication error (water pump internal electronics?)
0x29F2 - High Pressure Fuel pump (I've heard this can also cause rad fan to run at full speed for some reason!)
0x29DC - Cylinder injection shutdown (prob related to above)
0x2C2E - Pre-cat 02 sensor (maybe killed by unburned fuel going past it?)
I'm thinking a few of these will be related (e.g. misfires, fuel mixture, HPFP, cylinder injection shutdown, o2 sensor), but I think at best he's probably into a new waterpump, injectors and maybe HPFP. Looking at £2k for that lot. He's probably just going to dump it at auction and take it on the chin . Fair to say it's been a pretty horrible ownership experience.
