speed awareness course
Just done a speed awareness course today instead of getting 3 points.
I was expecting to be told off but actually it was really interesting. Obviously it was biased around curbing your speed but was almost an introduction into advanced driving techniques
Ok it was half a day, but compared to getting points and the faff with telling the insurance company for the next 5years, it was worth it.
Now, just need to make sure I don't get caught for the next 3 years

I did one a few years ago and it was excellent. At 40 I was the youngest person in the room! Everyone was exceptionally cynical to start with but there was some really interesting and useful content. We also got to drive for half an hour each with an instructor which as you say was much more about advanced driving than petty rules. Probably the most thought provoking element was being a passenger in the car whilst the other 'offender' that I was paired with drove. Her driving was so poor its amazing she ever qualified for a license although she was probably representative of a large proportion of the drivers out there. If I was in charge the current driving test would get you a provisional license but then you have to pass a much more advanced test every five years for full driving privileges (like driving in rush hour). Suffice to say I will never be in charge....
Coupe, KW coil overs, PSB limiters, Powerflex ARB bushes, 18" CSL reps, Aero skirts, ZHP leather knob, Whippy and proud. Probably needs a wash

So why does your insurance premium rise if you disclose you've attended one of these courses ?
Surely you are now a better, safer drive and therefore less risk....

Education is a good thing. Did one many years back when they were two days and included a fair bit of driving. Must have worked or I've just been lucky since.

I had a 'Drive Aware' one from the AA for an accident I'd had where I was somehow deemed to have not been driving with due care and attention.
I had a similar experience, but mine was a full day course - morning theory session in a classroom, and an afternoon back in a car with dual controls and an IAM Advanced Driving instructor. He just spent the afternoon essentially giving us a taster into advanced the driving course - it was really great!

It was at the greyhound stadium in hove. No driving involved purely theory.
The interesting thing was if you had 3 points your are 4 times more likely to make a claim, and that's enough for the insurers to put your premium up!
All the people there were very receptive and seemed to take it all in.
The statistics were very shocking though and makes you think twice about speeding!

I've done 2 speed awareness courses now I was the star pupil in my recent one getting all the questions right - pity I didn't practice those skills when driving, made the mistake of missing a recently reduced 50 mph section of dual-carriageway (I was caught at 59 mph thinking I was 11 mph under the speed limit) Still keeping hold of my clean licence.

I enjoyed mine aswell. Got done doing 61mph in a 50mph variable speed limit section on the M6.
I still believe the sign said 60 (it was the electronic boards that change randomly) and the year after, there was an article on bbc news about the variable speed signage over the M6 being misleading as the 6's looked like 5's.
Funny that... Oh well, luckily I didn't get point's or i'd have appealed it.
What i will say is the amount of older people in the room who didn't have a single clue about road positioning was quite alarming. No wonder there are so many middle lane hoggers!

Although advised to tell you insurance company, it not a legal requirement according to my colleague who attended the course.
