Classic car owners?

Post by RickRob » Wed Oct 25, 2017 5:50 pm

I love the idea of a classic car. I had a Spitfire 1500 in the late 70's and have a half-baked idea to get another one to keep me occupied when I retire.

However, I have a real concern that I would never drive it. Despite being a child of the 50's I have become very used to the features we take for granted on modern cars - everything from electric windows, air conditioning, ABS etc etc not to mention performance. If it was a warm sunny day would I choose the Spitfire over the Z4M Roadster? To be honest I cannot think of one reason to choose the Spitfire.

However, I am in awe of the passion and work that some people put into classic cars and really enjoy looking at other peoples' cars. Some great examples in this thread.
///M Roadster. 2007 Black/Black. Rear spoiler, whippy aerial, mud flaps and gimp-style wind deflector! :)

I had a mk2 for a few years, great car.. it had a bubble in the bonnet to accommodate a pair of SU carbs and a mean sounding exhaust.

I enjoy driving the 2002 (which is a standard 4 speed manual 1976 model with some suspension mods) and the Alfa (1975 1600 GT) as much as any modern car, love the direct steering and that I can drive pretty much on the limit all the time, perfect companions to a Z. They do keep you busy though!

Very nice, now worth a petty penny. Is the extra bonnet bubble just visible next to the main bulge

Yes it was tear shaped, and very well done, allowed space for the tall SU carbs which were slightly taller than the original strombergs, it also had a fast road cam and some other minor mods, I put it back to original spec over my ownership. It was the most well documented car I have ever seen, every bill, tax disk, mot, and photos of every bit of work from new until the day I sold it. Should I have kept it, probably!

Something reminiscent in the Z4 coupe..

I have only recently come to BMWs, my past has been littered with sporty products from BMC and Fiat. The ones pictured here continue to share garage space with the E89 :)
