Supermarket fuels

Post by John002 » Fri Jul 31, 2015 11:28 am

Have had some issues with another vehicle recently having filled up with suspected contaminated fuel. I thought the engine (it's second) was about to fail. After 5 mins/5 miles of blowing smoke across 3 lanes of motorway and lost power all returned to normal after topping up with a full tank at another garage.

I hope minimum damage has been done but after looking into it it seems I'm not alone. Take a look at this list of complaints of mainly supermarket fuels.

http://www.petrolprices.com/blog/have-y ... -fuel.html

I only use them if no other alternative is available as was the case above. Good to see Shell and BP are hardly mentioned.

It seems if you do damage your vehicle the garage will deny any claim made.

Be careful out there

Or it could be that people who buy their fuel from supermarkets also drive their cars like they stole them ;)

If it's true, what's the cause? To judge from the ones I visit, supermarket petrol stations have faster turnover than average. The volume of their sales means that they are unlikely to be relying on some kind of iffy secondary market for supplies. The days when fuel companies competed on mpg and go-faster claims are long gone.

If I couldn't get to a Shell garage, then the only supermarket fuel I would ever consider using is Tesco Momentum99 Super Unleaded. I've never had any issue with their fuel whenever I have used it

I've read too many bad things about supermarket petrol. My local station is BP and my Zed seems to enjoy their Ultimate.

Its the difference in additives between supermarket and branded forecourt. As above Tesco only supermarket (not the pikey shop for food) fuel or shell.

Tesco 99 mostly for me, sometimes Sainsbury's. No issues so far (20k).

The link is for a 'blog' from 2007 so now 8 years ago. I'm sure around that time there was an 'issue' with some contaminated fuel which was pinpointed to a specific plant in the South East at the time which caused major issues. If there was a huge issue with fuel at supermarkets and engines were having issues then we would know about it.

However you do realise that recently the amount of ethanol allowed to be added to fuel was upped from 5% to 10% and a recent study by which found that it had an adverse effect on 'super minis' causing a drop in fuel economy whereas it actually helped the performance of larger engined cars.

Is there any other way to drive a Z4?

Usually it's 1 tank of Tesco Momentum 99 then two or three tanks of BP Ultimate just to give it a different taste of fuel.

 Normally Shell here. But know problems with Tesco 99 either. If it's good enough for an Aventador. :D

Yep, been driving my daily driver Zeds for three years and 70,000 miles almost exclusively on Tesco's Momentum with not a problem.
