Some feedback on the Cheetah C550
The unit itself is tiny but has a nice clear display and the volume can be set loud enough to hear comfortably at speed with the roof down I hardwired the power feed in both cars without any problems so it can shift between them as required.
It has a few nice features
- you can set an 'overspeed' %age that it applies to the speed limit so that it'll only start nagging you if you're going (100 + overspeed)% of the limit e.g. set overspeed at 10% and, on a 70mph road, it'll alert you if you're doing 77+mph, 55+ in a 50 etc. You can set this as 0 (off), 5%, 10% or 15% and it applies to all cameras with the exception of average speed zones
- Customisable alert distances for the different types of speed camera so you get alerted at a distance you're comfortable with (or you can turn off specific alerts), it also has a separate category for 'Highway cameras' which are cameras on fast roads so you can configure a different warning distance for urban roads and A-roads/Motorways
- The alert distance is augmented by a setting for 'variable warning distance' which automatically reduces the alert distance at slower speeds
Still fine-tuning the settings but, all-in-all, it appears to be a nice little device

I've bought one of these too - Perry has kindly agreed to help me fit it, which means there should be no secondary breakages

Here's one of it in the X3 using the windscreen mount, I'll get one of it in #320 on the magnetic dash mount later when I get her out of the garage...

Couldn't be arsed to get #320 out of the garage, so I've climbed under the cover, plonked the cheetah on the magnetic mount and taken a photo - it's a little off centre in the photos but, it's a circular magnetic mount so you can change the position and angle of the Cheetah very easily
Initially I tried it up by the rear-view mirror using the windscreen mount but, given the shape of the E85 windscreen and dash, the best option (for me at least) appears to be to locate the device in the bottom right-hand corner - it’s easy to see there without taking your eyes completely off the road and you can still reach the buttons to silence alerts/change brightness at night or put it in ‘dark mode’ where the display only lights up when showing a countdown to the next camera
Oh, and it seems to have a very good GPS receiver, even inside the garage it only took a few seconds to lock onto the satellites
This is a bit dark, but you get the idea With flash

Switched 12v & ground via a coaxial power connector - you can buy a hardwire kit with inline fuse or use the lead from the supplied cigarette lighter adaptor (as long as you're connecting to a fused supply).gannet wrote:what power supply do these need? proprietary lead or can it be a micro USB plug or something

I take it these things are not actually 'detectors' in that they do not dynamically detect the presence of radar devices or anything? Are they simply pre-loaded with known camera locations in the same way that satnavs are?
Each time I pass the sneakily parked van the gits often put at the bottom of a really steep section of straight dual carriageway near me I get tempted to go back with some shaving foam and cover the window in front of their camera device (I don't think the vans are manned once parked up).

3.0 auto, sterling grey, hardtop, prfessional nav, dsp, digital tv, bluetooth, cruise, xenons, mfsw, cupholders, auto lights, auto wipers, folding mirrors, memory seats, wind deflector, pdc, 108s, LED sides/fogs, stubby, intravee, need a quad exhaust!

No, they're not radar detectors - that's be no good for all the fixed cameras anywayGreyZed wrote:I take it these things are not actually 'detectors' in that they do not dynamically detect the presence of radar devices or anything? They use a proprietary database which contains known mobile hotspots as well as fixed cameras, red-light cameras, average speed zones etc. The subscription rates for the Cheetah database are very good - lifetime updates for up to 3 devices is only £35 and, as long as you have a subscription, you get an email notification from Cheetah when there's a new version available.

That looks very neat - I like it. Mine is awaiting collection at the local delivery office. Should be able to get it tonight actually.
