weight loss surgery

Post by Popey » Thu Feb 16, 2017 6:34 am

I'm going to be having weight loss surgery soon, currently delayed due to a fractured knee.

I'm 36 years old, just over 6ft and weigh in at 19-20 stone. Years of struggling with my weight as prompted me to take matters into my own hands before it seriously impacts my health.

Just wanted to see if anyone on here as had any experience of it or knows someone that as? I'm personal going for a gastric sleeve, this seems to be the best fit for myself. It's not a decision I've come to lightly, the financial investment alone (£8000) took some consideration.

I know people will respond with diet and gym, good point but it's never really worked for me. However this will still be part of my life once I drop some weight. This is not a quick fix but rather a tool to help with my weight control.

I work with a Swedish guy who had part of his intestine removed due to being overweight, it certainly worked for him as he is literally 1/2 the size he was. He too tried Gym and diet without success.
Good luck.

Good luck to you. Gym and exercise is only one solution, if it doesn't work then you try something else. I hope it's a success

My mate is 50 and has always been fat, no other word for it. He loved his food and would always out eat me when out for a meal. He used to be 22 stone, but has dropped to 17 in just over 1.5 years, mostly due to his food intake and exercise. He has found the biggest thing is he has stopped eating carbs.
Your decision to go under the knife, but I would seriously look at diet and exercise first. Go on a good diet (correct foods) and good exercise regime like swimming and fast walks, don't need gyms, Good luck

Seems quite a drastic step for someone of your age, height and weight? Is it not worth investing a small amount of that money in a decent personal trainer to train you and give you nutritional advice for say a year. If you haven't dropped a couple of stone, then maybe go down the surgery route.

Good luck whatever you choose to do

I have spent a lot of money in the past, had personal trainers and at one point I was even seeing a nutrition specialist. This and dieting as worked to a degree but I always ended up putting weight back on. With out a doubt I have spent £1000's on trying to lose weight.

The surgery is a last resort but I have a lot of life left to live and feel I will enjoy it so much more with my weight finally under control.

Best of luck for the surgery.
What plans do you have in place for post surgery? You clearly need to make some dramatic changes or find yourself in the same position again.
FWIW I'd recommend following something like McDougall's Starch Solution or other plant-based programme. The beauty is none of unhealthful downsides that are prevalent in usual calorie restriction diets and the low carb/high fat fads currently popular.

On the upside of course, if you lose the weight your gas mileage will certainly improve. But seriously, best of luck.

Just the unhealthy fad of high carbs and cutting out whole food groups

Look at Tom Kerridge, the chef, he has lost loads of weight through hard word and good diet, you can do this. Summers on the way, ideal time to crack on with a regime

Drastic, but if that's what you need... All the best.

Personally, I decided I was too heavy around Feb last year. I'm 5' 8'' and weighed almost 14 stone, heaviest I've ever been.

I decided to cut out bread (I love bread) and limit my calories to 1500 a day. I used the "My Fitness Pal" app, and scanned/added any food I ate. TBH, I found it easy and lost just under 3 stone in three and a half months.

Dropped a couple of sizes in clothes and haven't felt better. TBH, one of the big things with me was customers at our shop commenting on how much better I looked.

All the best for our chosen course.

Best of luck mate, not an easy decision. My little fat brother had a gastric band fitted and whilst it worked for him, he seems to be putting the beef back on. He had his done on the NHS. I mention this because I am a firm beliver that if something is free, it is perceived to have no value. You, however have an £8,000 incentive to make it work.

Me, I'm going on fat Tom Kerridges Dopamine Diet. But I've only got to shift a stone.
