Pink Paper Driving Licence

Post by TitanTim » Fri Jul 14, 2017 11:51 am

Hi all,

After 35 years of holding my pink paper drivers licence I've secumbed and decided to replace it with the latest type, mainly as I don't really carry a wallet anymore only a credit card holder which makes the paper licence a bit more vulnerable to damage etc and a bit of a pain to carry around safely. Only applied for a replacement on Tues and its arrived today, speedy work. Anyways the DVLA says to cut your old paper licence into two and return it to them. Is it an offence not to return your old licence? I couldn't find anything when doing a quick Google :?

Yeah it is you can be fined for not cutting it up and returning it.

Having said that, I've moved house twice and updated my address with the Dvla and not returned it and haven't heard anything... yet

Thanks for the info, it didn't say about there being a fine on the website, just said to return your old licence, so if I don't return it will the DVLA come and arrest me :? Will they send me a reminder?

I may be mistaken, having briefly read the Gov UK website it's a fine of up to £1000 for not returning your license after updating your address.

Following a renewal of your license it only suggests you return it to the DVLA. I wouldn't worry too much but cut it up and send it for the sake of a first class stamp :)

Thanks again, only reason I ask is I just wanted to keep it for old times sake, daft as it sounds, I've caried it around for over 30 years, a shame to cut it up.

I moved a year ago and had to update two cards. Cut both up but haven't returned them although it said to do so.

Just write them a letter saying that, upon receipt of your new one, you shredded the old one and only noticed the bit about returning it afterwards....

I like Perry's suggestion.

If it doesn't work then I'll arrange a Forum meet near to the prison you're in so that we can visit you.

Make sure all of your entitlements to drive are correct on your new licence before you destroy your old one.
They are notorious for knocking off all the standard stuff us oldies are allowed to drive but new drivers aren't.

My mate even had his motorcycle entitlement taken off, he didn't notice for a while and even though he was able to produce his original motorcycle pass certificate they made him take his test again. :headbang:

I wouldn't worry about it. It's an old paper one. Stick it in a clip frame and hang it on your toilet wall.

Thanks for the replies

Double checked the new licence and all good :)

I'll hand onto the old one for now but hope I get a choice of prisons as the nearest is Stafford for piedofiles and I don't really fancy Rolf Harris's old cell

I've heard that not returning the old licence can result in a prison sentence of a minimum of 20 years.
