DVLA Timed Auction - June 2018

Post by Number5 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 7:09 pm

I attended this quarters DVLA Number Plate Auction at Mercedes World in Brooklands, near Weybridge this week. Now working in ANPR, I thought I knew a little about number plates and a rough ideal on values, but there are still some odd plates going for silly money out there !

Plates that you would pull up behind at a set of traffic lights and think very little of are now reaching astonishing prices. Fair Play to the DVLA for making a mint out of something that costs them nothing, as it all goes into the Government Coffers some way or another.

Check out the achieved prices here:- http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/ ... catalogue/

I'll add a couple of photos, but the top plate I saw go through took ages and was a real drawn out battle, with the initial bidding flying to £15k then crawling bit by bit from there to £51,000 with neither bidder willing to conceed. it was " 45 O"

Silly Money !

The Mercedes World was impressive too, with no admission fee its well worth a visit. Some outstanding exhibits there and you can test drive the Mercedes AMG GT-R, to if you wish. ( and are willing to part with £545 for half an hour!)

The museum is a good walk around with some lovely exhibits.

It's quite amusing to watch. Most of the big agency dealers seem to all sit on one big table together. They know what their clients maximum bid is and just hold their bidders card up until the bidding reaches their exit point, when they drop it down. Its odd to see two blokes sat next to each other chatting all day, then both bidding against each other, with whoever is online plus the telephone bidders !

One bloke spent £51k (which is about £60k with all the additional taxes thrown on) and then bid over £10k on something else 5 minutes later.(which he didn't get by the way)

I like to wander around the car park too as that normally has some interesting plates.

Interesting prices - I agree with you that SA17 DHU will look like any other nondescript plate on the road, meaningful only to the owner - bonkers price.

Very Greedy by the Seller as he purchased it for £4,300 in May 2017.at the Cheltenham DLVA Auction (Prob c£5.5k all in with costs)

I know because I pointed it out to SRHutch when I saw it in the pre-sale catalogue.

Other than it was probably purchased by someone of Indian extraction who will be creative with the numbers & spacing so it matches their surname and reads SAnDHU

It's just ridiculous. Apparently,

17 = N
7 = T
3 = E

All of the above are debatable, but what's not is that any of those combinations = t**t. :D

The 3 and 4 are almost forgivable, but use of the rest should result in going straight to the gallows :lol:
