Dunkirk
Went with wife to see Dunkirk this afternoon. Not sure what to expect after reading reviews which seem to be roughly 50/50 brilliant or utter rubbish. I must say it is probably the most intense movie I have ever seen, at the end the audience left the cinema in almost total silence, my wife said she was so tense she wanted to go for a drink before we went home
Not the utter realism of saving private ryan or the blood and guts of a normal hollywood blockbuster but a film worth seeing in my opinion

Agree with that, couldn't begin to imagine being there. I thought it was a shame the spitfire landed on the beach in the film though.

I really enjoyed it too. Very tense. Agree about the spitfire and the fact that you could tell it was a model as there was no engine - the prop was just stuck on the end of a metal tube. Well worth a watch though.

The Spitfire did land on the beach, it's a true story, not rewritten by Hollywood.Silverzedtom wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2017 11:29 pm Agree with that, couldn't begin to imagine being there. I thought it was a shame the spitfire landed on the beach in the film though.

Would firing a flare into the cockpit really set fire to the whole plane with no fuel ? Surely only the seat is flammable on a aluminium plane ?
Great film. Made me think what they all went through for this country.
I was buzzing for hours afterwards.
Recommend seeing it at a IMAX.

I'm waiting for the 4K video then I'll see it at home.
My Grandad was a machine gunner in the Ardennes in WW1, my dad was a demolition man (Royal Engineers) in the second wave on D-Day, My mum was a driver in the UK and my sis was a QA nurse.... I'm the only one in the family lucky enough to not take the Royal shilling. It's always a bit shocking to see what they went through.

I should have been more specific, I meant with its landing gear down as if it was on perfect tarmac.sharpyboy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2017 11:46 pmThe Spitfire did land on the beach, it's a true story, not rewritten by Hollywood.Silverzedtom wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2017 11:29 pm Agree with that, couldn't begin to imagine being there. Take a look at the photos on the net of the real evacuation- if ever there was a film subject more suited to CGI . . .
Intense in parts but just too vacant of atmosphere for me . . .

Loved it. Perhaps not the best film ever but a great alternative to the standard Hollywood WW2 film. Want more now!

I agree with this, the reason Dunkirk is the historic event it is was due to the massive scale of the whole thing, a scale that, for me, was completely absent when I was watching it. It looked more like 6-700 guys being lifted off a beach by 30 or so wee boats and the shots of the men lined up on the destroyers were awful, blatantly one line of guys shoulder to shoulder with not a soul behind them!paulgs1000 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 9:00 am Take a look at the photos on the net of the real evacuation- if ever there was a film subject more suited to CGI . . .

This is what it should have looked like:
Because of that the whole film felt a bit vacuous for me which is a damn shame.
And dont even get me started on Hairy bastardin Piles.... why is he even in it!?

The constant background sound spoiled it for me, the sort of atmospheric strings that are usually used to ramp up one moment of drama were there all the time. It made hearing some speech difficult at times. Still worth watching though.
