steering trim and gearstick

Post by stevespg » Wed Apr 26, 2017 1:55 pm

so my new to me z4mr has been cleaned, fettled and is now shinier than a new shiny thing - apart from the usual wear around the steering wheel trim and a little wear on the leather part of th the shifter knob.

I was considering buying new replacements, but goodness they're damned expensive - unless I'm looking in the wrong places!.

i like the illuminated thing on the shifter, so am likely to stock with stock rather than swap to anything else, - can these be retrimmed? or is a refresh with leather recolour viable? I've not done it before so have nothing to lose, but just thought i'd ask what options are available for a re trim.

regards the steering wheel trim. I started to remove the trim cover pieces, so that i can take them to a painter for a matt black refinish, but it felt like it wasn't giving up easily even though I've got all the screws out. is there a knack?

thanks for any advice.

You need to remove the airbag really to remove the spokes. With the screws removed they come apart easy.

No you need to retrim the leather as the gaitor on the F10 knob is attached. There are a few threads on how to do this if you search. Only thing to remember is the seams on the F10 mean you need to take account when reusing the plastic gaitor surround from your old knob.

I did it so it is easy :D

My f10 job:)
I put post up recently how to do as it is easy as
Just be brave haha
Depends how your gaitor is and how bad your current shifter is as mine was in good condition and in sale section
These can simply be pulled upward to remove and replace

Ref tristar
I bought new ones
Not cheap £124 i think
Didn't take airbag out just slowly pushed them under it gently and then screwed into place :)
