You don't. I've had it for some of my beemers, some I haven't. Never bothered me when I haven't had my 'valet' key, never used it!

Obvious ticking or knocking sound from the engine.

Any little signs that show it might have been in an undeclared shunt, e.g. front wing or bumper misaligned.

Leaking from the underside - engine or diff.

Ask about the ABS pump specifically - whether it has been replaced or refurbed

Not really sure what the 3rd key is for to be fair - bit of a chocolate teapot IMO!

If you lock the car with 1 of the proper ones then opening the car with the plastic one sets the alarm off (found this out at an airport parking site)!

I'd put much more time and effort into previous history and general condition.

Work would be done at Approved dealer. Can they offer updated pads?

Would you recommend the pads get changed the same time at the disks or doesn't it matter?

Pads 100% need changing at the same time as Disc's

Approved dealer wont fit aftermarket parts so stick with OEM for now

Didn't realise you were buying from BMW :)

Thanks Hopz! Anything else you would get BMW to replace at my cost whilst the car is being prepped?

I would have the engine mounts and bolts checked. The mounts are rubber and one of them sits right behind the heat shield and tends to go quicker because of the heat plus with these cars being 10+ year old and being rubber they are probably past there best, one less thing to worry about.

in the next 10-20k I would also have the half shell bearings replaced for piece of mind. Its not technically in the service schedule but is a serviceable part and its really the only weakness of these engines. Depending how it has been used they wear differently. Its about £1000 to do and most would have the engine bolts and mounts done at the same time as its all in the same area and cheaper to do all together.

It will come with a minimum 1 year warranty mate so I wouldn't worry too much for now.

Make sure they change the pads (at there cost) when changing the disc's :)

Are half shell bearings the same as rod bearings?
