I think you can dismantle the oil pump completely with a few screws and a circlip that holds in the pressure valve?
But its not something thats in bmw workshop manuals (as usual); a bit like the vanos. BMW only knows replace.

All particles will get trapped in the oil filter once its gone through the pump (it pumps directly in the filter). All cars are set up like that. First the filter, then it goes to the critical points like bearings.

Maybe they replace it because they fear the oil pump suffered damage.

Guido definitely, a good strip down and some proper cleaning would sort it but a dealers would never do that these days!

And your right about the filter but all the crap has to go through the pump once and if it's a constant wear over x number miles, all of it has gone through, it just won't have circulated in theory anyway!

So have they dropped all the big end shells out and checked the crank ???

Any pics of the spun shell ?

I have rebuilt numerous S54's over the years that have spun the bearing and the crank is ALWAYS marked.. Especially one that is knocked that hard...

Have they removed the cam cover too ?

Good to read things are on the mend. Had several bills in that region, when I ran a FIAT Coupe for 10 years. S54 is a wonderful lump.

for the sake of a grand its really worth doing these bearings at the 70k mark imo..... its cheap insurance....

OP don't drop all this money into it and sell it, you wont recoup anything, may as well run it till it for the foreseeable, even if you stick it in the garage for abit and forget about it if you decide to try something else.

Can’t argue with that. I’m going to get an oil analysis done even on only 35k, if all’s well then just keep changing the oil between service schedules and I’ll check the bearings at 50k if I keep it. As you say, cheap as chips insurance.

+1

Case not closed yet!

Oil pump also replaced by BMW on mine, BTW. Just routine for a bottom end rebuild, as others have said.

“Did a proper job on it”, as they say. At least you are skilled at putting them back together too, Danny. :D

T1berious wrote: Fri Oct 13, 2017 2:34 pm Right, the last time it was in was last year and it had an Inspection II 2015 so it's due one. I have done a video and currently looking at decent local indies as I've seen horror stories from main dealers with costs north of 4k.....

Last oil change would be last year. It has always gone to a main dealer.

It is however the dreaded marbles in a can sound while idle and rising in frequency with revs.

I'll pop the video into this once I work out how to upload it!

Engine sounds exactly like mine did.
