T1berious wrote: Fri Oct 13, 2017 2:34 pm Right, the last time it was in was last year and it had an Inspection II 2015 so it's due one. I have done a video and currently looking at decent local indies as I've seen horror stories from main dealers with costs north of 4k.....

Last oil change would be last year. It has always gone to a main dealer.

It is however the dreaded marbles in a can sound while idle and rising in frequency with revs.

I'll pop the video into this once I work out how to upload it!

Hmmm...similar but not identical. Yours seemed to only be apparent when revving whereas the OP's was more at idle. We are all speculating a bit still I think. Needs proper diagnoses.

Car safely back on drive after being transported back home via AA. Will be being recovered by garage on Monday.

But I'm fully prepared for a >1.2k - 2k spend.

the video was at cold idle.

car was gingerly started to get on the drive and that's it.

She'll be back, bright as a button and in rude health!

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

How 'cold' is cold start' for an unmodified M?

Mine cold idled this morning at about 850-900rpm (i.e. after being sat outside for 36 hours)...for the 10 seconds or so that it was immobile of course :P

But I’d agree with the majority here, and not drive it until it’s checked/fixed, as a £1k bill is much more preferable than having to replace the engine or fully strip/rebuild it.

Oh I'm not sure for standard, mine definitely cold starts around 1.2K for a minute or so, maybe that's part of my map but I thought the car did that beforehand, it's been a while though.

I'm in the followers / cams camp. The good news is that the primary failure seems to be the case hardening on the followers, so catching it early and not driving further avoids damage to the cams. If that is the cause, Schrick sell OEM followers to which they apply an additional hardening process. They aren't terribly expensive although I would replace them all. If you need news cams, they are pretty costly and the labour required increases significantly due to the limited access in the Z4M (cf the E46 M3). The job can be done without dismantling the entire front of the car but only by someone who knows what they're doing.
Where are you based? Phil at CPC in Amersham has done this job on several forum cars and many M3s.

Exactly. It can still be some blowby at a loose sparkplug or manifold.

Loud tappet like noises from Engine....

We'll see,

It was cold for a few hours. mines is stock but I get the feeling that while the work is being done I'll be looking at getting some "preventative" maintenance done.

The car has to last till the mortgage is finished (6 years).

It's a toy car so it will be used for pretty low mileages. in 8 years it's done 40K. Was at the Tesla showroom today. 100D is screaming my name.

Any suggestions on what I should get done (engine wise) at the same time greatly appreciated

At 91k, changing the bearing shells would be a good idea. I changed mine at 50k and they were pristine, but others have changed them sub-100k and found significant scoring. If they fail, the bill is seriously big bucks. Changing them should be in the high hundreds for parts and labour.

See what your noise is first....

I would be getting the bearing shells done and a set of shrick cams and followers..

Good for another 100k then..

Well,

It looks like Big end bearing \ bearing shells \ cams and followers at the moment. Garage is going to assess today but initial thoughts were it's from under the engine rather than top.

I'll keep you posted. (Mrs is already putting the nail in and suggesting a trip to the Porsche dealer...)

Sigh

It's not that likely to be both shells AND cams causing your noise but as above you might want to get both done anyway while it's in bits.

It feels a bit like a few days after a first date.

Do you call? Do you wait? You don't want to seem to keen but if its "lets just be mates" you'd rather know sooner right? I'll wait as I'm hoping to hear "All fixed! that will be £3.50" but I don't think that will be case...
