Custom Eventuri style intake

Post by Mangozac » Sun Nov 19, 2017 9:03 am

My DIY obsession strikes again: over the past few months I've been designing and building a custom intake for the Z4M, copied off the famous Eventuri design. All custom carbon fibre and machined aluminium. I'll be honest: it was a LOT of work. This was my first time playing with carbon fibre and it took a bit to get the hang of it. If I was paying for my time it would have been much cheaper to just buy an Eventuri, but I just like doing projects like this 😉

I haven't given it a hard drive yet (I'll take it easy until I'm happy it's not going to fall apart) so I have no "butt dyno" figures to report yet. The sound though! What a mighty intake growl! It really does sound spectacular - by far the best sounds on an S54 come from the intake tract rather than the exhaust. If this is even close to what an official Eventuri intake sounds like then you fellow S54 guys need to get one!

Wow awesome work. Are you running a standard exhaust? I was wondering if the noise from the back of the car cancels out the noise from the front.

Cheers mate! I've already had heaps of people asking and to be honest it's not really worth my while. Just too labour intensive and I have many things I'd rather be doing than running a production line (I do that as part of my day job!).

Nope I'm running this (which is pending some tweaking with the addition of some resonators once I set up a TIG welder): viewtopic.php?f=9&t=100278
Those mufflers are LOUD and you can still hear the intake. It's a very different sound and comes from the other direction. They compliment each other nicely!

How much do you think it would affect things if the carbon fibre was replaced with something mouldable like polycarbonate or ABS? Just thinking it might take a lot of the labour out of it.

Fair play to you mate!

I've gotta agree on the induction noise with a good intake system on the s54. I fitted the Gruppe M and it's gotta be one of the best mods you can do. I don't feel any need to modify the exhaust. :driving:

Moulding this using those plastics would actually be quite difficult. Even plastics with low melting temperatures would be difficult to form into that shape and then you'd have issues with them defining in high engine bay temps.

I'm any case, moulding the filter housing is the easiest part. It's machining the aluminium parts that are the most work...
