Hesitation on slight throttle - now with video

Weird one this, if I just blip the throttle, just slightly, the revs drop to the point of almost stalling. It sometimes shows its ugly head on the road, first put you foot down it hesitates

Any ideas?

mmm, its funny. It only started doing it after I had some 'options' sitched on (auto door locking etc) Thing is I think its got worse? Maybe since fitting the GruppeM?

I'm planning on getting it remapped at Evolve at some point. So if I can't sort it before then I hope they will

Bloody hell you're having a laugh! So twelve pages and what, £1000's spent and although the problem is 99% resolved no one knows exactly what fixed it :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I'm starting to lose faith in these cars, I should have stuck with my Rotary engined RX7

Mine wil hesitate in some cold mornings but they all do that, E46 does too, but I have never had any issues with the revs dropping though.

I think these cars need a good run out every now and then.

The M3 doesnt have the symptoms mine has. I've been reading over on M3Cutters and a lot of people have had the same problem. Only thing is there doesn't seem to be a definite answer, just lots of changing things and eventually the problem 'nearly' goes away. Then comes back, then they change something else.... Seems like a minefield

My main clue is it seemed to get worse after I put the GruppeM on. I think I may have put my oily fingers over the MAF and as the MAF is often suggested as a possible culprit, I think I'm going to remove it and clean and see how I get on.

give this a go Mark, when i fitted my intake there was a small dandilion type thing (i know nothing about flora...it was a small fluffy thing, and it wasn't one of those brazilian boys who play for man utd...) in the MAF wire, and once i'd put everything back together there was a noticeable improvement in the idle.

so try cleaning the MAF wire, dunno if some rubbing alcohol on just the wire would do the trick it you've made it greasy..

I wouldn't recommend touching your maf wire, if you feel cleaning it is the answer spray maf cleaner on it and leave to dry don't rub at it or your problem may get a whole lot worse.

Also, didn't you forget to connect the metal graze part when you fitted your gruppe m. That potentially could have caused issues with your maf too.

cheers buddy. I did forget to attach it, but realised very soon after, did 15miles tops.

Don't think it's MAF related.. I'd went and bought a new one and it did not make any difference.

I thought I had maf issues as my mpg dropped but 300 miles this weekend has made my car feel great and mpg was excellent 28 mpg at high cruising speeds.

New AFM, new plugs and using a fuel which may not have added ethanol seems to have sorted mine.

The AFM lead to overfuelling, low 20's mpg and very sooty exhaust tips.

The Denso iridum plugs made a notable improvement in the crispness of the engine response and its behaviour. Its smoother sounding on idle.

Not using Tesco 99 fuel and switching to BP Ultimate 97 seemed to significantly reduce the idle bounce/stutter. I will give shell vpower another go now the plugs are in and proven to work well with the BP fuel.

Mine has this too. It's really odd. Next time I take the car out, I'll get a video of it - and maybe some here can confirm normal/or not.

New plugs last year, no sooty exhaust tips, "normal" MPG, and no fault codes stored...

Mmm, thing is mine definitely seem to happen just after fitting the GruppeM (with me treating the MAF badly) It may just have been coincidence?

Well I'll try the MAF cleaner and see. The car has done over 70k now (so has the M3) so both could probably do with it?

Thing is I can't help think these two cars are too similar so one at some point in the not to distant future will have to go. I always assumed it would be the M3 but at the moment the Z is giving me to much grief so as the most unreliable.... not to mention I'm loving the roof off melarky in the M3 :driving:

I fell in love with BMW's last year after I bought our first, the 535d. But these two are putting me right off!! At this rate I'm going to be back in a Lotus and have another Rotary powered RX7 in the garage, life was a lot simpler and cheaper!

I can't even begin to understand how a BMW can be less reliable than a Lotus and a RX7...

its a minor issue really and @ 70k issues are to b expected, lets be fair your unsure of what type of life your car has had before you, if it help i have a bmw MAF unit that has less than 7k miles on it, its stored in my parts haul in the loft, if you need it drop me a line...

Beedub - if the OP doesn't need it, I'd be very happy to buy your MAF to see if cures my hesitation issues... let me know if that might work...
