Occasionally it can be a weak hose collapsing under vacuum so that wouldn't show in a leak test. Either way, getting that fixed seems a distant hope at the moment. They car isn't running at all.

Indeed, something vacuum related seems the most obvious answer, would be interesting to see what BMW come up with if they get round the bizzare DME fail!

Well, mine has just cut out twice when I started the car after a pee break on the way to Glasgow.

Started with tiny amount of throttle, but was showing an EML but my iPhone app only gives a non-specific error message.

I've obviously opened the wallet floodgates :headbang:

mmm-five, sorry for your woes. Check everything is connected properly on the intake side of the engine. I had a similar problem after routine work on my engine and it transpired a hose had worked its way free.

Other than these odd/random gremlins, the car is great, no issues with coolant/oil temps. Once it's moving there's no issue, and it not cut out since. Even the low idle is not all the time.

1st gear is sometimes very stiff to engage with the pedal on the floor, so don't know if that is related to the recent clutch/flywheel replacement - just not had any time to get it back to Graham Martin to check, but when I do I will ask them to look at the idle/stalling too.

So a bit of an update from my local specialist.

Found some errors in the DME, cleared them and updated the software and all the issues seem to be solved. He's keeping the car a few more days to see if this is a perminamt fix. I haven for my hands on yet but will know more next wednesday when I pick it up.

Interesting. Hopefully, when they can resurrect my car from its current comatose condition, this will fix mine too

Don't forget that resets all the adaptations, which is known to be a temporary fix only

Picked my car up this morning and I must say it feels a lot better.

They found a few errors on the the DME, I do have a print out but not to hand (one was a checksum error). The faults were cleared and the DME reprogrammed it (it now has a new part number?).

Car is now much smoother to drive and it seems to have improved performance (this may just be in my head)

Hi All,

Just to report back as I was quite active on this thread earlier on, have not posted for a while and will no longer be posting on this forum.

To recap, I replaced both TPS's, reprogrammed the DME to latest version and tried numerous other things to no avail.

I eventually cleaned out my ICV and inlet trumpets which resolved the issue. After a few thousand miles, the car slowly regressed and then went back to hesitating and spluttering as we know.

A few weeks ago I purchased a new part from BMW and am pleased to say this has once again resolved the issue for me. Car also does not do the strange dipping / missing when blipping the throttle from idle which it does when the car is also hesitating and spluttering, so these issues are one and the same in my opinion.

Best of luck all!

Happy to tell my problems went away with new plugs (old were.. really old!) and a ICV clean.

Sniffer,

Appreciate your sentiments in the other thread but i would be very appreciative if you would update this thread in a month or so to let us know if the ICV replacement has fixed the problem long term.

I've been in the same position as you where a DME update gives a temporary improvement, cleaning the ICV gives a temporary improvement, but i'm very interested to see if replacing the ICV gives the same temporary improvement or whether its the long term fix.
