Z4M S54 DME Flash / DME Software Update
Z4M S54 DME Flash / DME Software Update
Hello all,
I love my Z4M but since buying it I have had a couple of annoying drive-ability issues with my 34,000 mile 2007 June build Z4M.
I have recently been contributing to this Thread related to the low RPM S54 engined Z4M jumpy / flat spot behavior.
In trying to improve this well documented flat spot issue, I went to the trouble of updating my cars DME software to the latest version and I wanted to share my experiences of this with others.
The two annoying drive-ability "issues" I had with my Z4M were:
1. Low RPM flat spot issue / hesitation in a quick transition from overrun to mildly open throttle as detailed in above thread - I tried replacing both throttle position sensors / cleaning intake system including throttle bodies and idle bypass / resetting adaptations but the problem always came back.
2. Bad behaviour during initial warm up (when coolant temperature was less than 50 degrees) where the car would noticeably judder / mildly kangaroo / flat spot under mild loads.
I decided to flash my DME software with the latest version to see if this made a difference.
Unfortunately I did not keep a record of my original DME software version but I updated my DME to 7840449 which was from the V50.2 Daten files.
I am pleased to report that the warm up running is significantly improved to the extent that it is not much of an issue any more at all.
Very happy about this.
The low RPM flat spot issue I will not comment on in detail for the time being because I have only done 250 miles since the flash and I want another few hundred miles on it for the adaptations. I will say that after 250 miles, although the issue is not entirely eradicated, it is much improved thus far and only does it under very specific conditions now
Anyone else updated their DME and noticed improvements?

never had any of the drive-ability issues, i have a tuned DME running speed density tune. basically none stock , the car behaves faultlessly.

I have a BMW K + D can OBDII type cable which I have been using with the EDIABAS / INPA suite for some time successfully on different BMW vehicles.Adam D wrote:How do you go about updating the DME
I have used this suite to "code" features on the car using NCSEXPERT such as roof up and down with key, alarm chirp on lock / unlock, three indicator blinks for lane change, etc.
To update my DME I initially tried using SSS (Software Service Station) / Progman, which is basically the old main dealer software. It asked for some "codes / part numbers" which I did not have.
I therefore reverted to the basic way and used WINKFP which is part of the EDIABAS / INPA suite.
I managed to download these utilities along with the SP-Daten V52.1 through googling about. There is a fair bit of information out there it just takes some time to learn it all and get the hang of it.
Re: Z4M S54 DME Flash / DME Software Update
Just to update this thread with new information:
The first issue I had:
1. Low RPM flat spot issue / hesitation in a quick transition from overrun to mildly open throttle as detailed in above thread.
Unfortunately reappeared so the DME update did not resolve this issue. I was able to resolve it though and this is detailed in the other thread.
The DME update did resolve the unruly warm up behaviour and noticeably improved general driveability.

Thanks for the post. I am familiar with NCSExpert. If only there was a dump of the M Driver's Package DME around. It'd be nice to derestrict the car and keep it OEM.

OK sure. I'm new here...sorry.
No one really spoke about actual software versions so i wanted to add this to the mix as well.

Ignore the above - I'd rather an old bumped thread than a "use the search" response as per some others - not having a go at Mr Beechfrozenwaffles wrote:OK sure. I'm new here...sorry.

Interesting report - how did you update the DME?

I put the car on power with a decent PSU and used WinKFP to do the update. The file i had is from SP-DATEN 50.2.
