Agree!

If only we had a crystal-ball, heh? :)

It's also a shame that one can find oneself in a position of not driving a car to preserve the mileage and hence protect its value. I know this with my E31 840Ci Sport. I bought it over 12 years ago and have only drive it 2000 miles in all of that time...and even that hasn't been without cost. Sure, it's now worth a lot more than I paid for it in £s and Ps, but in real terms is today's value really that much more? A bit but not vastly so. In those 12 years it has been pretty much just a garage queen. If I'd actually stuck to its notional BMW servicing schedule based on time parameters ( which I don't subscribe to btw) then I'd certainly have lost money for the keeping all these years!

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/in ... 40Ci_Sport

I also agree that I feel the E46 M3 is a more complete car. But, one of the problems I found when looking for somewhere "to put some money into cars", in the hope that I would in some way offset some of the depreciation by just leaving money sitting in a bank, was that I realised that the boat had already sailed on E46 M3s....and similarly E39 M5s. The boat seems to be very much still at the quayside for Z4Ms with their values still very much at or near the bottom of their curve. Trouble is, I'm again now potentially locked into that position of not driving them in order to keep their mileage down until the day when (hopefully) they'll become "flavour of the month". I hope that won't be another 12 years!

I was looking at only Manual Coupe M3s and E39 M5s. Anything with halfway low-ish mileage seemed to have already taken a massive hike over the last time that I'd looked! :o

Yea..

E39 M5's have been on a rollercoaster... Although my friend recently bought a tidy 51 plate with 99k on,Lemans blue with heritage leather for £10k..

See thats a case in point, the E39 M5 was probably the best M car ever built.... They are old enough, rare and a bona fide M car in every way..

Why are they not through the roof ???

I guess the consensus is:

Are cars a good investment?

Generally not! Unless you happen to be very lucky to be in the right place at the right time. They might be "ok-ish", over a long-term, if you choose the right car, keep the mileage down...and crucially have NO OTHER DEBTS! If not, very rarely are you going to do any better over the long-term than the interest rates paid on any outstanding bank loans, mortgages etc.

The BMW Car Club recently valued my 840 at roughly 100% more than it cost me 12 years ago. That sounds good doesn't it? Well, actually nice as it is, firstly it isn't a vast amount of money for that length of time and whilst certainly it's more than I would have accrued by letting that money just sit in a low-interest bank account £1 today isn't worth what £1 was 12 years ago. Then subtract the costs incurred even during (and because of!) its idleness (much of the time just SORN'd) and suddenly the figures aren't quite so impressive. And, that was in the face of me having no other debts.

What I need this time is for the Sunday Times Motoring Supplement to run an article this Sunday saying that the Z4M is the best thing since sliced bread and that any true Petrol-head "...absolutely needs to have one or their willy will shrivel and fall off." :D

In all honesty why not enjoy them seems like a huge effort for such little gain when you could be making memories and having great experiences?

I loved my M and although I would like to get something else I get drawn back because of the great memories I had in it. Same with my love of 911s because ive had the pleasure of driving 2 excellent examples on the absolute best roads in Europe where they belong and literally had the time of my life.

I sold the Z and traveled the world for a year and it was one of the best things ive ever done, learned more about culture, the world and myself than I ever would have done on the previous path I was on. I met amazing people, beautiful places etc etc then I got back and a couple of weeks later me and my dad and a few of the really good friends I made here went on our first Eurotrip and man what a trip it was. Great times with me and my dad and incredible roads and car. Visited some of the iconic factories and was sort of like the ultimate father son trip.

Not only did I have a great time with the car it also enabled me to tick off other goals. I also hope that one day I can do the same with my kids.

Thats what ownership is to me. Its not 'having' a car for the sake of it, its making experiences.

Everyone is different but just my opinion.

Depreciation and appreciation are just factors if you enjoy the car then surely it was worth the money paid.

To think you can get a Z4MC for nearly £15k in 2017 is an amazing bargain compared to what other cars are going for. A 2009 C2S 911 is still £42k+, even a Cayman is another £20k+ for a good one.

I do wonder why is the Z4MC valued so highly in certain parts of the world, but relatively low here....?

wheres the clap emoji..... read back a good few pages and i made some similar comments.
This forum does a great job of devaluing everyone's cars - mainly because price discussion threads are populated with prospective owners who have a vested interest in getting everythign they want for the budge they have, rather than buying the car they can afford and accepting what that buys you.

Luckily outside of this forum the cars are selling quite well, and at slowly appreciating prices (that this forum's members don't seem to accept). I know of about 5 ex-owners who all turned healthy profits on their cars, and i can list about 20 forum members who don't like that they can't get a <30k miler in 'mint' condition for under £20k anymore :p

At anywhere under £30k (where the 30k end is probably a sub 10k mile car) the z4mc is a great car, the real bargain is the roadster because of the less desirable roof making a nearly identical car much cheaper to get in to :p

You can see what car i had to buy to justify selling the Z4 and upgrade, which perhaps says a lot about how good a car they are at these prices. Just don't expect values to be going up forever - the global car market is faltering.

Somewhat contradictory post unless i'm reading it wrong ? :? Owners selling & making money / cars selling well at appreciating prices ? but the global market is faltering :? Aint that pretty much what is being said over recent 6-9 months pages ?

I would love to see those 20 names though  is there even that many members actively considering a ZMC as their next car :? let alone ones with sub 30k & as for the 5 who sold & made money ?
I don't recall reading anywhere on this thread ( or forum ) that its impossible to make money from Z4Ms :?

I know this is a values post but please don't let this turn into Pistonheads where all they seem to do is write long replies about values when time is probably better spent driving their damn cars!

Sadly a secondment opportunity has come up with work and I’m not fancying storing a car for two years, nor do I have the ability to just let someone look after my E86 M so I’m thinking I may need to sell!

I’ve only had the car since June, purchased from a BMW Specialist and still covered with warranty which I upgraded at the time of sale as the car was supposed to be a keeper!

2007/07, 53000 miles, FSH, recent interim oil and filter change. Due inspection II in 6000 miles.
Carbon Black
Black Leather
Piano Black Trim
Illuminated F10 M5 gearknob
BMW Short Aerial
Currently on E92 219M Wheels, Original 224M are available as well.

Any indications on a ballpark value as a private sale based on the current market?

Potentially one of the most interesting sales of the year ( with regard to a gauge of the current marketplace for ZMCs ) as it was purchased in the year , from a dealer & has what can be described as relatively low miles & comes with a few tricks BUT needs a Ins2
I won't offer a value in case it annoys some members  but hopefully others will & from a forum point of view if you could update how things go then that would be great

Needs more details...

Is history all BMW and impeccable ?
Owners?

I would suggest that its worth what you paid for it ??? Its only been months and prices havent really changed apart from the normal seasonal swings.
