Daft oil change question
Ok, no mocking!
Engine warm-ish to allow oil to flow.
Jack up front, onto axle stands, remove sump plug.
Do I then need to lower it from the stands & back to flat? Makes sense to need to, but no mention of it from my searches.
Not doing it currently, so don't panic & go into 'forum rescue mode'
Thanks

Re: Daft oil change question
Or get an oil pump and avoid having to jack it up at all

Re: Daft oil change question
I found I got the most out by jacking up each side alternately after it was on ramps and started draining. Did you loosen/remove the filter before draining? That will help too. Good to see another DIY oil change!

Re: Daft oil change question
Curious to know which engine oil will you be choosing ?
Mine went in to day for fluids changing , only 6months/4500 since last service but mindful of prevention better than cure , ive gone for Millers CFS 10w 60

Re: Daft oil change question
I'd rather put in a cheap oil that meets spec and change it more frequently than a branded one left for longer.

Agreed but why not the best oil & still change more frequently Its probably more important than fuel choiceScooba_Steve wrote:I'd rather put in a cheap oil that meets spec and change it more frequently than a branded one left for longer.

Re: Daft oil change question
A possible DIY change!
Wife bought me jack & stands for my birthday, so seems daft to not try it myself.
Typically I've waited for my most expensive engine as my first trial!
Opie do a change kit, but not sure if it has the crush rings, need to enquire. Mr.W, this would then be the Castrol 10w60 might be me being a brand whore though, always used it myself for top up. I'm fairly happy on the price for it, unless there are significant savings, Scooba - not major ones I'd assume.
Decided that pushing 40 I need to man up & be able to do some basics on a car.
I've done 4k since the service, mainly motorway at legal speeds so am hardly straining the engine & fuelly is showing 27.8mpg, so the oil is go having a hard life but just think changing it at mid-point is the way to go.

Re: Daft oil change question
+1 and even 'top brand' oil costs less than a tank of fuel so it's not exactly expensive, even better if you keep an eye on places like Opie or ECP and buy when they've got a sale or decent discount codemr wilks wrote:Agreed but why not the best oil & still change more frequently Its probably more important than fuel choiceScooba_Steve wrote:I'd rather put in a cheap oil that meets spec and change it more frequently than a branded one left for longer.

Re: Daft oil change question
The Millers engine oil was just under £60 for 6 litres , could have Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 for less but i am a Millers fanPerryGunn wrote:+1 and even 'top brand' oil costs less than a tank of fuel so it's not exactly expensive, even better if you keep an eye on places like Opie or ECP and buy when they've got a sale or decent discount codemr wilks wrote:Agreed but why not the best oil & still change more frequently Its probably more important than fuel choiceScooba_Steve wrote:I'd rather put in a cheap oil that meets spec and change it more frequently than a branded one left for longer.

Re: Daft oil change question
Millers was a preferred brand when I had an older TVR,the Rover engine liked the zinc additives......well respected company and good shout re.Opie, they usually offer discounts to clubs/forums....might be worth an enquiry if there are a few DIYers on here.

Re: Daft oil change question
Ohhhhhhhhhhh well you won't be downgrading anyway so I'm safe
Perhaps I should have been clearer - I firmly think the intervals are a joke and don't believe in them. My order of preference would be:
1. Good quality oil changed frequently (I'm running 5-7.5k intervals at the moment but have yet to have any analysis carried out).
2. 'Cheap' oil that meets spec changed frequently
3. Good quality changed on schedule
4. Cheap oil changed on schedule.
Obviously the best case is what you want to see but equally if that wasn't an option then I'd go for cheap done every 5k over Castrol done every 15k.
