Vanne's new racing seats.

Okay, so after the atrocity that the Momo seat thread was, I've since been in morning and got over that, putting it down as R&D. I came across some /real/ nice seats and have been in chats with Steve from Tillett Racing in the UK, your part of the globe, and have settled on his B6F XL 47 seat with custom cushions and headrest.

These seats are made on demand, so I guess lead in time for production is around 6 weeks at best.

Ill be using the VAC floor mounts with Billit side mounts and Tillet mounting kit.

I was initially concerned that my butt would be too wide for this seat, but Steve answered all my questions and knows his stuff. He assures me that this seat will be probably the nicest fitting seat I've ever driven in, even over longer drives with the custom padding.

The seats are expensive and aggressive, no doubt about that, but I think these will suit the build i have in mind for my car much, much better than the Momo seats i originally ordered.

Okay, first some pics of the seats..

Just had a lengthy discussion with a few Zpost members in regards to the pro's and cons of running a 5 point harness, (or 4 point for that matter), and the obvious next thing that came up was how to mount the belts and what happens in a roll over.. So I had a thought of running a single tubular bar from the rear strut tower up to the roof, across the roof and then down to the other rear strut tower, re-enforced by the OEM belt slots on the upper B-pilars. This would have 2 effects, that in case of driving the car with no helmet (95 percent of the time) that it would be impossible to hit your head on the roll bar as its positioned up and rearwards from your head. (even in the senario that the seat broke), and provides a great place to mount the seat belts.

Id love to hear your thoughts on this, I have an appointment next week with my friend in Dubai who build rally cars and roll bars/cages, so we will look at the options on this idea.. Thanks for the help

Nice seats eh? :poke:

Wow they look super awesome.

My only comment is with the seat sides quite high, and when mounted on rails/sliders, with your car being a coupe, will it give you enough room to squeeze in/out?
Will you need a removable steering wheel or something to give you more space?

I spent a couple of hours in the passenger seat of an S2000 with those seats and I can confirm that they're relatively comfortable. Sure it's not for cruising but it'll be fine for quick trips.

Looking forward to reading your updates

Vane,

That looks superb! Steve Tillett gave me some great advice about kart seats last year.

Exdos,
Steve has to be the best bloke I've dealt with anything to do with the car, period. Any queries I've had, within a few hours he's replied, professionally and with his massive amount of background experience. Top bloke. I think in the end he answered about 20 emails, and was probably starting to get sick of me

can't wait mate, the only thing that worries me a little now is the belts, and how thats going to work. As stated above, probably going for a 5 or 4 point harness, but to do that ill need to build a bar/roll/frame..

cant wait for my seats to arrive, Steve reckons they should be ready to go at the end of the first week of next month.
SAE, with the seats fully backwards there should be ample room to climb in/out.. or so I've been told.. Hope the fittment is perfect. :driving:

Like those seats but couldn't live with them in a road car

Footnote for uk drivers - took my jeep in for MOT the other week only to be told 4 point race harnesses are an MOT fail as current rules require they can be fastened with one hand.
Tester was happy to pass it as an ex rally drive enthusiasts and felt they were safer than 3 point standard.

If you're going to use it on the road I'd strongly recommend against harnesses. Want to change the air con? Nope, can't reach. Want to check your blind spots? Nope, can't twist your torso.

Or, you leave them loose enough to allow this but then they're worse than useless in an accident.

There are no rules in regards to one handed operation, but the harness must have id tags for equal or better than British Standart. Note 3 on page 3 of the MOT Inspection Manual Section 5.1 states that an adult (full) harness is acceptable if it has a British Standard Mark or an acceptable alternative.

C&U Regg 47 (4)(c)(i) states a that a belt can show a British Standard mark or a mark including the specification numbers, BS 3254: 1960 or BS3254:Part 1 1988 and we would accept a harness with these markings.

It is the responsibility of the vehicle presenter to prove the acceptability of any alternative.

Breezer, unless your wearing a HANS device, checking your blind spot should be just the same as your normal 3 point seatbelt. Reaching the AC controls or radio? well that just depends on your seating position and length of your arms. :D

"Many people fit harnesses to enhance safety features of their sports car. Some are required to if they participate in competitive motorsport. It's know that in severe accidents passengers wearing 4 or more point harnesses come off better than passengers wearing the 3 point inertia reel equivalent." - Mot seat belt testing.

at any rate, those are not my words, just the internet talking.

Cj10, I've been trying to find the rules about one handed operations, but have come up no joy, do you have a reference by any chance?

exactly same route ill be taking, with a twist...... mine fell through as you know vane but imo this is the perfect way to get some real weight out the car, they really add to the feel of the vehicle too, with my being a strict weekend toy, i have no issue with them at all... Well done, your car is turning into something rather special!!

There's references to it on the internet about requirement of being inertia and one handed, but I cannot see a reference in the MOT handbook. The online version is however 4 years out of date, so not certain.

As it 'passed' I didn't challenge him, but will ask when I next see him of the rule or legislation referenced.

lol, i just noticed that the belts only show 4 points, but are in actual fact 5 point as they include a 5th and 6th point mounted to the floor as anti sub action that also slots into the cam at the bottom.

Are you turning your car into a track car or do you intend to use it much on the road.?

My car is a once a weekend a month car, mostly used on the track, and getting to and from it. Also a few spirited drives a year on the road. Around 2k miles a year total. A few car shows and some general movie/date nights.

Those seats look very cool, am I right in thinking you save around 25kg each side from this ( I think standard electric seats weigh around 30kg).
