Winter Project

Post by VRSteve » Fri Nov 11, 2016 11:20 am

So,

I'll be putting the M through its MOT at some time this month. It never really comes off the road for winter, but I wont drive it in the salt or the rain.

While the weather is miserable I've got myself a box of parts to fit over winter:

Poly Rear Droplink bushes
Turner rebuildable rear top mounts
Powerflex rear ARB bushes
Powerflex lollipop bushes ----------------DONE
Powerflex front ARB bushes--------------DONE
Front control arms------------------------DONE
Front drop links---------------------------DONE
Bilstein B6 shocks all round--------------FRONT DONE
OEM RTAB Bushes-----------------------DONE
Turner RTAB limiter kit------------------DONE
New drive belts x2------------------------DONE
VANOS filter and seal kit for the oil restrictor---DONE
CPV Valve seals---------------------------------------DONE
Not decided if I want to replace the VANOS hard line with a braided one from Hack engineering.
Also have a set of braided brake lines to go on but they may wait until next winter, I'd rather get the calipers refurbished and painted over winter so I can do a full brake refresh at the same time.

The front top mounts have only done 3000 miles, so they are staying as they are, I would go for something uprated but I can't find anything that I want for a price I want to pay!
I also fitted Eibach springs all round 3000 miles ago, so they won't be changed.

Putting this up for my own benefit really, mainly so I have somewhere to put the pics as I go for future reference!!

Serious amount of work, fella - presume tracking and alignment setup after this too?

Yeah will take to a place I use for the MOT and get them to set up the alignment at the same time.
They have a guy who does all the alignment and he's a bit of a BMW fanatic!

If you fancy a little trip Hounslow tyres are excellent for alignment and it's only £50!

The guy who does it really knows his stuff, it's not a flashy place but they know exactly what they are doing and are happy to accommodate.

First update.

Hoped to do a fair bit today but her indoors had other ideas.

Managed to get the car up on stands, and remove the lower re-enforcement plate.

Image

Thought I'd start with something easy.

Here is the CPV with a tell tale oil trail.

Image

Tool to remove the CPV and the new O rings.

Image

The seal had gone really hard and flat. Couldn't get an o-ring tool under it so had to cut it off.

Image

New seal fitted.

Image

Replacement is reverse of removal, valve needs to be torqued to 20NM.

To get to the valve you have to reach over the down pipes and just past the lambda probes.

I managed OK with a large ratchet and a short extension.

Image

I then had to go and help in the garden!!
