Z4M Battery Replacement

Post by Havard » Sun Feb 12, 2017 7:03 pm

Looks like the battery is on it's way out. Although on a Ctek most of the time, my trip to Wales this weekend showed it struggling to turn over in the cold, once on a run it is ok for a few hours but it doesn't seem to take long from fully charged to on its arse. You could tell it was straining trying to fire.

Existing battery is a Yuasa 096 650 CCA and 75aH. There seems to be a lot of contrasting information on what the battery should be and I thought this was the original but I don't think so now. How can you tell if it is AGM or not?

Also, how do you get the plastic bit of the + terminal without braking it. Once I get that off, it should just slide out. I assume this is as straight forwad as it looks and I don't need to consider anything else with the car.

I can't remember how I changed mine tbh, couldn't have been too difficult because I'm rubbish at anything more than a nut and bolt, I replaced mine with an AGM Bosch from Euro Car Parts, lifetime guarantee for around £90 iirc :driving:

Think it's a small nut that's holding the wires in place in middle of red plastic
Loosen n lift
Slide battery out
On back will have a gas exhaust pipe that will come out of battery
Im selling my oem battery in sale area as was misdiagnosed as was alternator hahaha
Fail batteries fine!

You will need go reset windows though

Reset windows?

Not sure what that means. I was hoping that this wouldn't be too fiddly. I can seen the nut in the middle but I assume there is another clamping the + tereminal?

They will reset once disconnect battery
As in don't know where bottom or top of windows will be for 1 touch operation
Hence reset

OEM batteries were AGM...
I've never had an issue with needing to reset the windows after a battery swap but that might be because I've always made the swap either very quickly or connection a charger to the terminals in the engine compartment during the swap.

I have the car on a CTEK under the bonnet. So could I change the battery without any loss of supply to the electronics.

I am going to put an AGM battery in but I am prretty sure the one currently fitted is not AGM, do we foresee any issues?

This will be on a CTEK most of the time in the garage so would an AGM make much of a difference.

Ok. Did the battery swap without any dramas. Question is, the vent pipe at the back of battery was not fitted and had some kind of blank in the pipe.

The old battery was not connected to this pipe. The new battery does not have a vent at the positive end of the battery so I am not sure if it needs to be connected at any point. I have fitted a Halfords Yuasa Black battery with a lifetime warranty but I wonder if the original battery was fitted wrongly without the vent pipe.
