A link to a good place to buy would be great.

Many thanks in advance.
CTEK 5.0 was the one I purchased as it does AGM batteries.

I got mine at a good price from amazon at the time - no idea what the prices are like now

I don't even know what an alternator looks like, or where it is....will be googling tonight!
Yeah google FTW!!

a friend of mine also had similar issues with his Z4MR recently, he replaced the battery and still had problems.. turned out to be an old tired voltage regulator on his alternator... he got one off Ebay and fitted it, car was well after that...

Dear lord
You shouldn't need an AGM unit unless you have stop-start, a good non-AGM battery should be well under £100, keep away from cheap Chinese made stuff and any brand you have heard of are often made in the same factory e.g. Varta are Bosche etc
I was only going AGM as it was what it came with from the factory.

Found a Bosch AGM one for £130 ish, so not too bad.
Are you sure it was AGM from factory, I don't believe my original battery was AGM.

I only assumed it was based on what I read here - and certainly the one that I removed was....and IIRC the year code seemed to put it aligned to the age of the car (realised at the weekend the car was first registered on my 30th birthday - sad fact, but a special one :D !)

11.1v and barely able to start after just 24hrs off the CTEK :o

Once it started, there was a healthy 14.6v across the terminals, which based on my research would suggest it is reasonably safe to say it's not the alternator

So I have the choice between these two

https://www.tayna.co.uk/S5-008-Bosch-Ca ... P9701.html

https://www.tayna.co.uk/S5-A08-Bosch-AG ... P9809.html

The non AGM has a higher CCA and Ah, so what exactly is the benefit of the AGM???

Save your money and get the non AGM one. The extra £50 will do nothing for you or the car. The alternator charges all the time, we have non electric power steering, no stop start technology so there really is no need for AGM.

AGM was only a requirement for start/stop, and I have never seen a Z with an AGM battery. Mine was a 2007, so no idea if they fitted later cars with it? Seems strange to me though as electrically, the M is old technology.

AGM can put up with rapid deep discharge and fast charge cycles, self-discharges more slowly and performs better in cold weather so is useful on stop-start equipped cars particularly in cold weather city driving with a load of other electrics running. No real point on your car though. You can't go wrong with a Bosche S3 or S4

New battery was tested at 12.6v, now fitted & will test again after a few days not moving - hoping I don't find a puddle of electricity on the garage floor

Need to order a vent tube connector as doesn't appear to be there, and the previous AGM battery didn't have a vent.
