I was obviously taking the piss earlier, as I don't by the car for the M badge, but for the performance. It was just that I wanted the most powerful model of a specific series and the M happened to be it for the BMW range. When I bought my first e34 M5, I was also looking at Audi RS4/RS6, C43/E55 AMG, Jag XJR, etc.

You could say anything that didn't/doesn't have a variation of the original M1 engine isn't really an 'M car' - but then you'd get all the e30 M3 fans up in arms - and the M1 didn't even have an 'S' series engine, it was an M88, which then went on to become the S38 as used in the e28 M5, e24 M6 and e34 M5 (3.6 & 3.8 versions) - so you could say only those were true M-cars.

You could go on and on with different arguments to validate your specific little opinion, but it wouldn't make any of them correct - as we all know the M stands for 'Marketing' and not Motorsport. As none of the original M-cars could ever be used for motorsport without some serious modifications, and were just an opportunity to sell 'sports cars' on the back of BMW motorsport success. I suppose you could argue that some of the newer GTS/GT4 models are closer to the race cars, but they still have their creature comforts for the road.

What does piss me off though is the way BMW apply their 'M tax' despite the parts/cars being made in exactly the same place as non-M cars, and the service monkeys essentially carrying out the same job and charging twice the price :thumbsdown:

I'd hate to think how much a normal, modern M-car would be if it was still hand-built though :o

Correct...for me personally I had this feeling more with the 1M then with the M2. M2 looks still angry but more mature. The look grow on me and now I rather like how the car looks. But the looks are not the main reason I bought my M2...the way it drives (for that price) is the main reason I bought mine. ASD is indeed stupid; so I disabled it πŸ‘
I love the look of both the 1M and the M2, bit ott, yes but I like that!

I would of loved a 1M to go along side the zed but I couldn't justify putting 10-15k miles a year on one, doesn't seem right to me anyway.

How do you disable the ASD?

I'm a somewhat of a purist and used to be also like that until I drove a 1M and M2....on paper they may no be real M cars, but they feel like the real, exiting deal...even with turbo engines. A Porsche 991 GT3 with PDK feels also like a real Porsche GT even if it does not have a Mezger engine and PDK only. On the other hand; the new 4 cilinder turbo Cayman/Boxster is not a true Porsche for me anymore and I don't get it who would want to buy a 4 cilinder P-car... :roll:
I'm completely with you, not saying they aren't true M cars just saying the scope has changed just like with the GT3s to make them more saleable and easier to drive etc.

I can't agree more about the 4 cylinder porsches though, I mean I can accept putting a turbo on for the efficiency etc but it needs to be at least 6 cylinders so that it feels different?

Finally had a chance to drive the car properly yesterday at the Yorkshire Moors. Unfortunately I am too cheap to let someone else drive my zed so my friend had to chase me in a 116d. Lol.

It's great to hear that the Z4M is still relevant and rewarding compared to it's closest modern-day equivalents.

I won't mind the M performance strips if that's what you are referring (can't open the link) as they make the car even more aggressive. However, as I am using this as my daily driver including business, I will probably look a bit silly turning up at my client's in a car with racing strips. πŸ˜‚

I agree about the intent of the original M cars (the intent of the current M cars seems to be that customers will pay more for anything with an M attached hether or not the car warrants it).

In regard to your comment about the Z4M brakes, I haven't had the same experience. Perhaps you are talking about the stock BMW supplied pad material? I use Porterfield R-4S and am quite pleased with them.
