2 generations of proper M Cars

Post by rage999 » Wed May 24, 2017 9:51 pm

Recently bought an M2 Coupe to be used as my daily driver. Thought about trading the M Roadster in after 7 years of ownership but I have found it so difficult to replace (even though I have been averaging less than 2000miles per annum in recent years) and therefore, I've decided to keep the car along side instead. (Maybe a TVR Sagaris as a worthy replacement in the future 🤣) Jumping back into the Z4 for the first time today after driving the brilliant M2 day in and day out for the last couple of weeks, I initially thought the Z4MR will be underwhelming but I was wrong. It still feels so special...... the way it goes, that steering feel, that organic mixture of noise generated both by that 3.2 lump in front of me and from those quads at the back..... The M2 feels like a computer game in comparison but it's definitely the best and only real M car in these turbocharged era. It's the nearest thing to the E46 M3. I just wish those young engineers in the M division do a lot of these...

Nice, clean looking M2 as well. So many have fussy little bits all over them!

Lost a bit here
Best car in turbo era?
The m2 runs the m135i, m235i engine
A 3.5 turbo engine, and an aging one at that.
Which ofcourse leads me to the Mpa
m performance automobile, the m135i m235i of which these are a few of
The same said engine is sat in your engine bay
Now, to become a valid member if the M Power line up, the car must have an S engine and the car is built by M for the track and usable on road by definition

Therefore your M2 by default isn't a real M
Hence the Cs is coming out and with it's own S engine
So therefore best new M car would be the M3/4

No disrespect to D4dawg, the M4 is a decent car but to me it's feels too wide especially on the B roads in the UK and slightly clumsy on power delivery mainly by old M3 standards. I had one for a couple of weeks 2 years ago (a milky blue one unfortunately) and unfortunately it underwhelmed. Whilst the engine may be bespoke in the M4, it will have no more character than any M2 or M135 or any recent turbo charged BMW engine out there at the moment. Take the tuned exhaust noise away from all recent M cars, they all sound like a 120i. However, the standard M2 exhaust note also sounded way better than the M4 which I feel is simply loud and flat. But well, it's just my 2 cents anyway and u are as right as I am.. 😂 The M4 I had is a convertible so maybe the lighter Coupe would have been a much better driver.

the standard car has got enough stage presence. The Z4MR is elegant in comparison.. but i do like to keep my cars standard.

Covered a couple of generations myself at one point as I had a 2006 Z4MC and a 1990 e34 M5.

The M2 was going to be my 'go to' replacement for the Z4MC, as I've never been one to buy the 'popular' model, but the M2 may now be becoming less 'rare' than I'd like. Although prices of used M4s may tempt me that way instead.

The group (Z4MC, e34M5, e46 CSL, R33 GTR) still go out to Wales, Scotland and the Ring - although all of us have at least a 2nd car.

So in your opinion the 1M is also not a real M-car...because it does not have a S engine?
Believe me; I drove with all the recent BMW M-models and the M2 is one of the best and most fun BMW's that they now have in the line-up. Real M-car or not..? In my opinion the M2 is a very exiting car that is an awesome daily car and very much a true M-car. For me it is some what the modern (tubocharged) interpretation of the E46 M3.

By the way; a "normal" M-car is NOT build for the track! You can indeed use them on the track; but a BMW M is initially designed as a fun and exiting street car (with still some comfort and useability). For example; a standard Z4M is not great on track...the brakes are crap...you can make it great on track but a BMW M is not designed as mainly a track car.

The F M3/M4 was a car that I did not like...I did not like the sound, the power delivery of the engine, the steering feel, the big size, etc. I'm actually glad that the "normal" M2 does not have the same engine as the F M3/M4.... S engine or not; it will always be a turbo charged engine and no way it is going to be as iconic or remembered as a S54-engine.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of modern turbo era M cars, what a daily, and what a 2 car garage! And I thought mine was pretty cool... :D
An all M car garage, not jealous! :P
Enjoy!
