'Fast and Furious' alignment . . .

Post by paulgs1000 » Sat Jun 03, 2017 6:00 pm

Back to OE exhaust, new front discs and pads, full set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports, cruise control fitted and full check over (specialist says it does not need an extra service and oil recently changed) before a Euro trip and fresh MOT (no advisories) - last job for now - a 4 wheel alignment . . .

Delighted that my tyre fitter suggested I try 'Revolution' at Gateshead for the full Hunter alignment and print out. Have used AK Automotive in the past and will use them again (MX5 racing outfit who set up my 3.0si beautifully after asking what I was looking for - so I will be back) but I was looking to check where the M was and return to standard settings before making any changes.

I was very impressed when I arrived, always encouraging to see interesting cars in the car park. It was like visiting a set from the Fast and Furious film - very clean and modern with suspension, wheels and performance parts all on smart display :D Staff in company shorts and sports shirts (are they called technicians now not mechanics?). My booking time was 11am and I went out to meet Andy and his clipboard in the car park. Talked through the car and what I was looking for and he then talked through in detail the process. He drove the M into the workshops and I was offered tea or coffee and shown to a large picture window with views of all work being done and a large screen which relayed the computer screen images from the Hunter setup - all very impressive.

Technician came out to discuss the findings and suggest what was needed. He highlighted what he thought was causing a slight pull to the left and asked if I was experiencing a slight oscillation under heavy acceleration? - yes but I'd always put this down to the M diff - he suggested what might be causing this and that he might be able to dial some of this out with the required adjustments.

Cost was per adjustment - a colour computer print out of 'before' and 'after' was provided with the bill and all in I paid just over £80 including VAT. Process took a relaxed hour. (Paid £75 at AK Automotive some time ago - 45 mins).

I've a hoon this weekend in the Borders so I'll get a good idea of how the M feels now and what changes I'll want after that. . .
we shall see :D :driving:

Nice move there Paul , i'm heading the same way with my ZM .
It's nothing i can put my finger on to specifically find fault but pretty sure in its past "owners" or "owner" have had the geo set up tweaked from OEM to suit their own quirks & it just niggles me at certain times  the last ZM wasn't this way , its literally a fractional feel but its there & its been the same on all 3 wheelsets ive run the car on so that rules out the alloys or tyres .
Will report back once its been Huntered

In my case, the slight pull to the left and the investment in new tyres prompted the alignment. Yep, it makes sense to have it set as per the factory before doing anything else.

I get no pull in either direction whether braking or accelerating , zero quiver or wobble at any speeds over any surfaces , it's more a fractional hesitation when i turn into a bend either left or right :? like i have to ever so slightly wrestle it but not fight it , very strange to describe & if i hadn't covered almost 6000miles in the last MR i would not have noticed it .
Alignment should tell all but i have a fear of tweaking things that don't need tweaking & my concern is to alter the current set up & actually create more noticeable problems rather than erase this marginal one that i may even be imagining :?

Interestingly - that's what I'm feeling now it's set up as per the factory settings . . . I want more initial turn in so it's going to be an interesting hoon tomorrow to check that - I'll let you know how I get on.

411 miles Andy - about 150 of them on brilliantly twisty and challenging roads with great driving company so a good test of the set up.
Well pleased and didn't feel any of the apparent reluctance to turn in - leaving well alone. Might experiment with tyre pressures though . . . :D
