Thanks for the help

Exhaust. OEM?

Post by Bmwlondon » Wed Jun 28, 2017 3:51 pm

Long time lurker, but need some advice now re exhaust..

Have Z4MC, perfectly maintained, only BMW dealer, 90K miles, no modifications. After paying £3400 for Inspection 2 and new discs in May, the driver side Exhaust muffler now fell off.... BMW quoted me £2900 to replace both pipes and both boxes, which I agreed to. However, they now came back that they not have the left side muffler till September..! I checked various OEM part providers and earliest someone in Germany says is "mid-August".

I can only replace the driver side now and replace the left side in September, but the dealer reckons there is a risk when replacing the right side that it might affect the connection of the left-side box, and this might break soon too..

I always wanted to keep my Z4MC as original as poss, but wonder if there is another option? Is there any way to get hold of AC Schnitzer exhaust (they seem discontinued, not sure anyone knows how to source one?)? Given I planned to pay £3K for oem I guess if possible then it would not be much different.

Thanks!

That seems overpriced - even at BMW main dealer rates/prices.

Insp2 is less than £1200, discs all round are less than £1000, so there's a £1200 excess somewhere.

Get yourself to a specialist and you'll save a fortune (even using genuine parts), and probably get a better service from a more experienced & motivated technician.

As mmm-five has said, go to a decent indy, getting you're pants royally pulled down by BMW cost wise. At 90k miles you're getting diminishing returns (likely none existent now) anyway persisting with a FBMWSH.

I doubt you'll get a new Schnitzer exhaust now, limited run for the car at the time I would imagine. Ebay you're best bet but I wouldn't hold your breath, pretty rare I imagine, and a premium and a half no doubt.

I'd take it to a decent indy exhaust place, google is you're friend, and go from there.

Thanks both.

The inspection2+discs also included some replacement on the power steering, but I take your points, I certainly overpaid/overpay.

Problem is OEM part not available till end Aug/September, so that will be same with an independent.

I think there's someone on here selling 2nd hand OEM boxes. Also, they regularly pop up on Ebay. Then take them to an indy to fit, BMW probably won't fit as not supplied by them but will cost you a fraction of the price all in, well under £1000 put it that way. £2900 for two new boxes fitted is throwing money away IMHO unless there's something I've missed regarding fitting.

Edit :
There you go: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=92992

Buy this kit at the same time to sort the other parts that might fail, fit at same time as back boxes: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-M3-Z4 ... 2286020882

£300, plus maybe £150-£200 or so fitted at a decent indy = a shed load of money left over for beer to celebrate an epic saving!

Thank you, that seems like good advise.

The "Center muffler with pipes" apparently also needs replacing. I would call this the pipe/tube that connects to the box. On the video they sent me they just refer to the right box and the connection with the pipe, so I assume the end of the pipe is also damaged. But I guess that still could be done by indy too.

Take Nige bcs's advice and give him a call!!!
The flange kit WITH RINGS Mike linked to are also a must at £30. Had a trip to BCS today and - guess what - flange and ring kit needed. I'll be back there next week to what I thought was going to happen today...still, I won't regard it as a wasted trip if next week goes OK and I appreciated the techie saying he couldn't do the work without further parts - better dismantling the whole back end only to find you can't now re-attach it.... See you next week Nige!
