ABS/TC/Handbrake Lights

Post by Tusk » Thu Aug 03, 2017 7:18 pm

Hi guys

I recently changed my ignition cool out as my previous one was not working properly. Since changing it has reset my clock to --:-- and when I start up it leaves the ABS/TC light on.

I tried again straight after and no lights...

Then again a few hours later and the lights were back.

All was fine before the ignition switch change so I am hoping it is a code clear or something similar required.

Any thoughts?

this sounds expensive.

DSC module issues maybe?

however when the clock resets it usually points to a sh***y Battery, and when this car battery goes bad the electrics completely start to go crazy.....

It does indeed sound expensive. I've not used the car in about a week prior to this which probably doesn't help. Seems odd that it was fine before the ignition change?

Edit: Took it for a long-ish run and all seems fine now. Plugged in a computer to read codes and cleared 2 minor faults - but importantly no DSC unit failures! Think this points to a flat battery issue - might look into replacing. The car had a new one around 2014 I believe - may check paperwork.

As Beedub

Sounds like battery
Check it's 12.9v cold
And around 14.5 when running
As don't want a new dsc module

As above, sounds like the battery. Mine had the very same issue when the battery started to fail.

Yea I'm pretty sure it's battery related as well - thankfully. Does a low battery cause problems - I.e could this trigger a DSC problem/other?

I'll look into Eurocar parts - any brand generally recommended? Lion is cheapest on there, but I've not heard of them before.

Bosch is generally recommended. Wouldn't cheap out on a battery personally.
DSC lights usually come up along with EML as they are all on the same 'circuit' or 'bus'I believe (K-Bus, or similar). Doesn't mean there is a specific error with the DSC unit, they just all come on as one, more complicated than that but roughly speaking. Had this a couple of times myself with none DSC issues.

Yea I put a Bosch in my old VX220 and had no complaints.

Went past Costco today and the Bosch book and it recommended an S4 005 - ECP seems to suggest an S5 096. Will look into it some more, but if anyone has an insight into which please let me know!

Sorry for the post hijack, i have an issue where I get both the ELM and engine light come on and off, sometimes lasting for days when it comes on or goes off. also the break sensor lights. The car drives perfect and no issues.

Could this be a battery issue?
thanks :)

Well, the S5 096 is what most people use I believe. Can't remember what I put in mine, either that or the S6 (AGM). Some say the AGM others say the S5, not sure what the OEM is but doubt you'll go wrong with either. AGM is a fair bit more expensive.

If you get EML lights, best thing to do is plug it in to diagnostics and found out what they are as they'll be logged. Might be the battery, might not, best to find out what was logged and go from there.

i personally stick to the AGM ones... expensive however. Not sure if the bosche ones are vented like stock AGM, i went to BMinispares and got a new stock AGM for 130 quid.....

AGM batteries serve no purpose in our cars. Only really needed where stop start technology is used.

AGM batteries are also not vented. I don't believe the OEM batteries for the Z4 were ever AGM.

I'm sure my stock one says AGM :? :? i could be wrong .... whatever it is, its vented..... so if AGM doesnt require a vent then.... its not AGM.

True though I do vaguely remember posts in the past when I was looking for a new battery mentioning that the OEM battery was AGM. I could be wrong, but would be nice to be confirmed by someone. If the car had a charging map designed for an AGM battery then I guess it could make some sort of difference.....
AGM for £130 though is good if you can get one now for that. Expect from BMW will be a lot more!
