Rebuilt engine Dyno - 378bhp!

Post by sixspeed » Thu Apr 20, 2017 1:11 pm

Finally got my Geoff Steele rebuilt engine on the dyno yesterday up at Evolve. Quick health check and a map tweak for the cams part of that as well.

Really happy with the result, 378bhp and 290lb/ft

Spec is H&S exhaust (cat back)
Evolve "CSL" intake
Schrick 288/280 cams

Back at the 'Ring next weekend. Hopefully manage more than 2 laps this time!

Can I ask how much the work was? Did you do it due to age, or other concerns?

As mine approaches 70k, I do wonder if I need to get some work done.

BTW, I followed you in the golf a few months back (Black M roadster), heading into Oxford, you looked at me funny!

Nice engine spec and I'm sure it's running better but I'd take the number with a pinch of salt.

I had my old E46 M3 on the Evolve dyno and after their "remap" it read about 360bhp. Took it on a Maha MSR dyno (which is what most OEM including BMW use) and it read 335bhp multiple times. Unless the car was dyno'd pre and post on the same hardware then it doesn't really compare. Even the same model of dyno at different locations can be running slightly different setups.

Glad you got it all sorted and showing some good figures, but you know the only real way to test it is against my car on a airfield runway right. :driving:

My car made less than bmw claim on the evolve dyno, I'd say it was conservative :?

Haha!

I'm there on the 6th? (although in my newly acquired Giulia QF, not the Z - but it could be there... 😜)

Had several dynos at Evolve over the years. Last one was post the CSL box install and managed a rather paltry mid 330-ish bhp from memory. Car was on about 85k then IIRC. Cups were alleged to result in a lower power reading... But maybe engine was getting tired by then.

Also, first run yesterday was on the old Epic map (still catering for the cams) and actually showed very strong output (374bhp) albeit it didn't run as smooth. Essentially the Evolve map really put the same power out but now drives a lot better (from my analysis on the 80-mile trip home anyway), and at a slightly less advanced ignition and less lean configuration which will be safer.

Essentially what I'm saying is that I'm fairly confident it's an accurate figure. I'll prob run at one of Charlie's (Surrey RR) mornings too in the next few weeks to get a second reading.

Glad to see it back together  Let me know when you might do the surrey run, I will try and join. I have a similar config to you (csl, schricks) and had the map tweaked recently for the SS backbox. Numbers were similar to you (power a little up, torque a little down) on a magnum dyno, and like you I'm fairly confident it's an accurate figure but it would be nice to run it elsewhere plus compare to yours.

Yeah looks like we have very similar spec cars. Looks like July is the first i can make so I've added to my calendar!

Just incase, I'm also at the BMW Brands evening next week and Goodwood Breakfast Club on the 7th.

An engine dyno can also be variable, depends how it's calibrated & set up on the day?
