Z4 M54 3.0i vanos?

Post by mvanliessum » Mon Jun 07, 2010 1:11 am

Hi guys,

Got a ticking rattling noise around 2500rpm. Is this a vanos problem (see video)? Any idea if its covered under BMW CPO warranty?
2005 model with 56k miles.

Thnx in advance!

If you have a CPO warranty then i guess the dealer is your first call to make, i'd be surprised if it wasnt covered. Dont try to work on it or fix it yourself if you have a BMW warranty, let them have the hassle.

Let us know what it turns out to be and good luck.

Thnx, i went to the BMW stealer today. The first guy heard something but then somebody else came. This guy didn't or pretended that he did not hear anything, i drove around with him for 20mins but he said he could not hear anything unusual.
I told him that i was clearly hearing something rattling that does not sound right, he told me to make a appointment so they can have a look at it. Appointment is set for next week.

On the way back i clearly heard the rattling when i drove home with the ac and radio off. So i went to a independent garage which always helped me out nicely and asked some guys over there to listen, it took them 2mins and they told me right away its a vanos problem.

So my question is what am i going to do next week if they say they don't hear anything wrong?

Thnx guys

I wouldn't take no for an answer, I would visit another dealer and explain the situation to them an get them to confirm the fault. You have to be persistant with some garages otherwise you wont get anywhere.

I recently replaced my Vanos oil seals with the Beisan made seals, it was nightmare of a job thanks to my own stupidity but I recon my fuel economy is better by 2mpg and the performance has smoothed out.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Update:

It didn't feel right how the dealer talked to me about the engine noise. This morning i went to a different BMW dealer and i have to say there services was excellent! Had all the time for me.. i even had no appointment. Drove around with the guy and he heard the noise as well! They had loaner cars available and time to look at my car. :D

It can be a hit or a miss with dealers unfortunately, now that you have found a good one i would stick with them in future. Any word on the problem diagnosis?
