We are getting a lot of spam on the forum at the moment. It is not just our forum but lots of other forums too. Unfortunately it seems to be real people registering to post the spam, and as such it is almost impossible to counter.

If you see spam on the forums please press the "report post" button to notify the moderators, but please DO NOT REPLY to it.

I am working on a way of dealing with the spam more effectively but in the mean time it would be far better not to bump their posts by replying to the posts.

It's on the right hand side of a post, it's a up side down triangle with a exclamation mark. :thumbsup:

How about making a condition where you need a certain number of posts before you can start a thread in the buy and sell section, but then I guess spammers would just open one in the other sections? :x
 
I thought there was a blacklist for forum software that stopped specific spammer (and others as required) ip addresses. I thought I'd seen something a few years back when I was thinking of setting up a private forum - http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=1861645

Correct and any modification to the forum code to do anything special present problems when the forum software is upgraded. The problem we are currently having is with human spammers and reporting the post makes it stand out to the mods. Then when a mod logs on we see it right away and we can deal with it quickly and remove the spammer and any post made by them.
 
Thanks for the support and for the ideas guys.

One issue with black lists is they are notoriously unreliable and can generate false positives. The last thing we want to do is stop legitimate users logging on.

I know it is a pain in the a**se to see spam on the forum but please believe I am working behind the scenes to stop them posting this crap. Unfortunately we are constantly under attack from hackers of one sort or another (won't go into too much detail here) so my priority is fending them off first, then tackling spam.

Hopefully I should have a good system to fight the spammers in place in a week or so, but in the mean time please keep reporting the posts and not replying to them.

Ha... well, not quite, more checking a few times to make sure I'd read the post correctly, and wasn't reporting something legit!
