Z4 Depreciation Prices

My partner and myself are thinking of selling both of our cars to get one main car (save on costs etc.) I got BMW to give me a figure for my 2004 Z4 2.2 65,000 miles with only two owners. Full service history and with a few adding bits, like quad exhaust, 19" wheels, aero spoiler... They said the best they could offer me was £5000! I was a little shocked to be honest, for such a great looking car and it performs beautifully its not alot of money!

I bought the car three years ago in November for £11,000 and its now worth £5000! That works out at loosing over £2,000 a year! Now I'm not trying to make a point here but that's alot of money to loose every year! Surely it can't loose any more value?

Seems a little low but then it is a dealer offer. Know its not a benchmark you can rely on but Parkers is showing your car as:

Franchise dealer - £7640
Indy - £6920
Private Good - £6465
Private Bad - £4880

I'd try and sell privately. Especially as the sun just came out.

The 3-litre cars of that vintage are around £6.5k now so I reckon you'd get about £6k. Not a lot for a great car is it?

I'd take a look on Autotrader. That should give you an idea as to what the market thinks the car is worth. Any dealer will usually try to have a £1k margin on a £6k car, in case of any remedial work that may be necessary. Sell privately if you can :thumbsup:

A dealer won't take any of the extras you have fitted, especially non standard fittings, the wheels, the exhaust, and the spoiler all make it a bit more of a specialised car for them to sell, but privately, get the right buyer and you should be able to get £6500 maybe £7000 for it. In a recession, 2 door fuel heavy cars depreciate faster than more fuel efficient family cars.

You might find you can get more for the wheels as a separate sale and put the original wheels back on to sell the car, if you still have them.

Thanks for everyone's input - it just makes me really sad that such a great car isn't worth much! I really enjoy driving it and of the principal now that I might just keep it and eventually it will start to gain value (at some point lol). I don't have the original wheels any more so that's a shame!

In terms of the modifications, BMW said nothing about the upgraded wheels but they didn't see the car in the flesh. I did have the same problem when I was trying to P/X it with BMW. They said that would have to put everything back to stock in order to sell it.

The way I look at it is...........

Imagine the cost of trying to hire a car like the Z4 for a few years

This way it does'nt hurt so much

But its an old car and there is a newer model so is not as desirable although it is. Thats all to put into perspective too. Its what you get into buying a prestige car and also the market atm.

Put it this way... My dad bought a brand new M3 in 2007 one of the first in the country for £65k sold exactly 3 years later for £28k. Do the math yours isnt a bad deal.

Always have to factor in depreciation.

Saying as the car has been lightly modded, it may be best to offer it for sale on the forum, and/or Pistonheads... people looking to buy will be more knowledgeable about mods!

TBH I think depreciation of £2k a year is about the norm. Was offered only £5k p/e on a £23k new car for my 2003 3.0i with only 29k miles . Paid £9k a year ago and a wad of cash on new tyres , servicing. detailing and 10 months tax left !!.

The only cars that seem not to suffer depreciation are " classics " - bought my previous Elan for £5750 - kept in 3 years and sold to the first viewer for the same amount .

Best not to think about it or you'll just get worked up - I'm keeping mine and will continue to enjiy it.

Hmm I bought my 35i just under 2 years ago for £33K... its now worth £24K... A loss of nearly £5K per year (albeit it was only 8 months old when I bought it) so I have a tiny both of empathy for you... just a tiny bit.

I'm just a little shocked that car's loose so much money, I guess I should of seen it coming anyway! Selling privately defo sounds the right way forwards, BMW are just going to try and rob me! Here are some pictures as requested
