Removing excess touch up paint on stone chips?

Hey guys,

Thought I'd have a go at touching up some of the many stone chips on the bonnet of the zed at the weekend so sprayed a little aerosol paint into a lid (I find the touch up pens paint far too thick) and used a cocktail stick to apply to the chip.

Left overnight (this may have been my mistake here) and came back in the morning to a reasonable result but many of the chips now have small 'bumps' of paint around the outside of the chip which doesn't look great from some angles.

I tried flattening down with a DA polisher but it doesn't really touch them as it's not localised enough.

Is there any kind of solvent I could apply to remove the excess paint without harming the top coat? I think in hindsight I should have removed the excess after around 30 mins or so before it had fully cured, similar to the way the Chipex system works.

depending on the severity and if a da polisher isn't shifting it, your options are anything from a rotary or wet sanding with 2000 paper and then hitting with a DA but obviously both need to be approached with caution

I use a 3" air powered DA, with 1500 followed by 3000 discs, and then the big DA with meg's 105 and 205 polish. Works great on solid colours.

Ah OK, I have a 3" plate so looks like the 1500 and 3000 grade pads are what are required (do you just use them with water)? Any links to pads you'd recommend?

I use these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-100x-3-75m ... 2749.l2649

And these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-100x-3-75m ... 2749.l2649

With one of these, although mine was cheaper from Euro; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional- ... xyrx5TlZl3

Make sure you clean the area thoroughly and use a clay bar or the like to remove contaminants otherwise the DA will pick them up and grind them into the paint!

Use a de-nibbing tool first before DA/compound. I have a Festool De-nibber same as this: https://youtu.be/7TgS6qVoA5A
Not cheap (£50ish! :( ) but I've had mine for donkeys years.

No, that's no better than using a DA,and will possibly mar the surrounding paint.
